Inspired by Spoonrobot, some beamshots of my lights.
on: January 26, 2008, 06:55:46 AM
I really got into nice flashlights this summer and have amassed what I think is a nice collection. So inspired by Spoonrobots earlier thread and being bored tonight I tried my hand at some outdoor beamshots. Thanks to Spoonrobot for answering a question on his thread about camera settings. So with much fanfare, to the shots.

Heres the shots,
First the daytime shot for reference.

Distance to trees maybe between 20 to 30 feet.

Task Force 2C cree. Good thrower, not much sidespill but big and bulky.

Coleman MAXX Cree AAAx3

Surefire 6PD with P60L. Has a good hotspot for throw and lots of sidespill. Very good runtime

Surefire 6P

Surefire E2D. It must have been so cool to fire one of these up back in the day. Has such a good smooth beam with no rings like incan Mags.

Rayovac 3watt. Cheep well built light. Good output has blue tint.

Surefire E1e. Little e1e, only 15lumens. Good pocket low output light, but surprisingly moderate throw.

Fenix 3PD High. Has 4 outputs. This is high, the one I use the most. Good output and small pocketable light. Another favorite.

Fenix P2D High. Another one I EDC alot. Shot for high output. Even smaller and more pocketable than the P3D. One I carry allot.

NiteCore Defender Infinity

Surefire L1 cree Low. The L1 has to be my favorite EDC light. The low is good for conserving my night vision and reading when a high output would bounce back and blind me. Low as great runtime at 16 hours.

Solarforce Q5 Cree drop-in for 6P. Throws really good with lots of sidespill. Perfect white tint.
There ya go. I hope you guys enjoy these it was fun to put together.

Nice pictures and nice lights!

You actually have a lot of the lights I've been planning to purchase. How do you like the P2D/3D and the Surefire Cree lights? I already have their respective niches covered for EDC but I would like to get some for my collection.

It's always funny to see the massive differences between old and new flashlight technology. I'm sure the E2D looks awesome by itself but if you run a P3D next to it it is significantly less impressive.

The Fenix P2D/P3D are really nice lights. They are small, streamlined and elegant in their one way. Your right about the difference in old and new technologies.

The Surefire cree lights I like allot. Both the E1L and the E2L use the new cree LED more for runtime rather than eye blazing output. Which is something I like. The runtime graphs I have found for the E2L have it at 100% for 9 hours of flat runtime.  I really like the TIR optic that surefire uses with them to maximize throw. It makes for a nice perfectly round beam with decent spill. The same can be said about the L1. With it's small form factor, two outputs, easy to use interface(press tail cap lightly for low, press harder for high) and nice throw it makes for a great EDC light. With it's optic, to my eye at least it looks like it can out throw the two cell P3D on turbo.

Thanks Benner, It was fun to put together. I look forward to getting some more lights to add to the shots. I have a cree Q5 270 lumen drop in for the Surefire 6P in the mail to me. I can't wait to see how it compares.

Outstanding photos, prime.   Thanks for posting them.

I have a Surefire E2L Cree and have been considering an E1L and L1 so your photos are of interest.

It comes with the cree LED. It's available at LOWES, but there are still allot of the LUX III versions around so you have to look for box that says X-Lamp LED on it. Spoonrobot did a nice review of it here.http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,3049.0.html

The L1 cree is really an impressive light. The low is bright enough to navigate around a wooded path, indoor room, or look at a map in a car and then the high is really bright and the TIR optic makes a perfectly round beam that throws really good. The tail cap works really good too. You press lightly for Low and then harder for high, twist lightly for low, tighter for high. You can lock the light all the way off for pocket carry and even lock out the high setting and just set it to press for low. It's even small enough to clip to your hat for an improvised head lamp.

If you like the E2L, your sure to like either. I think that the beam on the E1L is more flooder than the E2L and L1. Even at 30 lumens it's still pretty bright.

I got the Q5 Cree drop in for my 6P tonight and I have to say I'm really impressed with it.

I seems like quality construction comparing it the P60 and P60L Surefire drop ins. Not bad at for $20.00. I'm pretty happy with it. Shot also added to original post as well. It throws really good and has a perfect white tint.

According to the Surefire web site, new dual brightness level E1Ls and E2Ls will become available next month (in March 2008).

E1L

E2L

You will be able to purchase the heads separately, too.

I recently picked up a F04 diffuser for the L1. It turns the light from a spot to a perfect flood with no rings or beam artifacts.

It fits over the bezel nice and tight and is made of rubber with a hex shape for anti-roll.

Here the before and after.

I picked up a Surefire E1b Backup recently. Bright little light. I like the multiclick interface for high and low. Here it is on high.

It does throw really good. It has a slightly tighter beam than the L1 and a little more brighter.

That is a very throwy light.  I think I would have to pair that one up with an F04 beamshaper if I were to EDC it.

Does the E1B use the same head/optic as the E1L?

It's funny you should mention the F04 diffuser. I took these shots for CPF yesterday. The F04 turns the E1b into a whole other light.

The head of the E1B is shaped slightly different than the E1L but it fits the E1L body just fine.

I got the new E2D LED Defender earlier this week and this thing is awesome. 120 Lumens through the TIR optic is like a spot light in your hands.

I have read on CPF that there was some single mode E2Ds shipped, but the one I got is the duel mode 120 lumen high and 5 lumen low.

I had noticed that also. I think it may have something to do with the pictures taken at different times. When taken at the same time here you can see the E1b slightly brighter than the L1.

Still pretty close thou. I guess there's truth to what people say on cpf about how L1 high is really 80 lumen than 65, not that I'm complaining.  :D

I wanted a high power AA light and after much researching I decided on the NiteCore Defender Infinity. I'm pretty happy with it. Really good output on high and I like the fact that I can set the "Low" to whatever output I desire.

This is running on a Energizer E2 lithium. From what I've read it's even brighter on rechargables.

Fenixstore.com is now carrying NIteCore lights here. https://www.fenix-store.com/index.php?cPath=93. Best service around. You can see on the page that there is the special Silver nickel plated one and the regular one.

I didn't know that 4Sevens was carrying NiteCore and, thanks to you, I now have a SmartPD D10 on the way!  >:(  :D

I think it might be the perfect AA light for me....  We'll see if it displaces my Novatac for top EDC.
