SAK Mod Contest?
on: February 25, 2012, 03:36:53 AM
I have been having some discussions with Rotokid lately and one of the things we've been discussing is the possibility of reviving the old Mod Competition.  My question is, how much interest would there be in it?  Is anyone interested in participating?

We'd approach it differently this time than we have in the past, opening it up a lot more, and doing it in conjunction with the new site at www.swissarmyknights.com.  We have some great ideas for it, but we want to know who is in before we commit to anything.

Oh did you have strict rules on mods before?  Any links to old contests as that was likely before my time here?

It wasn't so much strict rules, but perhaps a little limiting.  We tried to keep a fairly level playing field by getting everyone to start with the same kind of knife but I'm not sure it worked out.  Here are the two winners from the 2006 contest:

2006 Mod Contest

2007 Mod Contest

Well don't wait for us, we have a few other things that need to be done before we decide whether or not to get into this.  I just wanted to see how much interest there would be overall.

Just a question, are we moding scales, tool setups or both?

I might give this one a go, just for the fun of it, I know I have a snowflakes chance to win but I always enjoy projects like this.

I hope the sky is the limit, but we can base it on any cool tool 'frame'... of course Grant hasn't hinted at the contest boundaries yet.   :pok:

Perhaps there could be two sub-contests?  One for scales, and one for tool setups; I see so many wonderful scale variations that beat tool setups hands down, but each have their own merits and difficulties.  Just my twopence. :D

The two times we've run it so far have had about five or six entrants, so for such a small response its not worth breaking into categories.

Maybe a requirement that the winning SAK will be auctioned off and the proceeds go to MTO donation box? Don't enter it if you don't want to give it away. That should level the playing field a little.

Among this crowd the winner could make some bucks off this forum, maybe already has. Good way to give something back.
