Wooden SAK Scales - First Attempt
on: February 29, 2012, 04:01:22 PM
Having stayed up too late last night looking at threads on custom made wooden SAK scales a seed was planted in my head.

I had a quick Google search to find a local supplier of wood. It turns out there is one not too far away. Before I venture over there to pick up some walnut or some other nice wood, I wanted to have a trial run.

During the high winds of late December/early January a silver birch tree had been blow over outside my house. I cleaned it up and now have a supply of silver birch.

I don’t intend these to be functional scales, just a first try to learn and gain experience from.

Out came the Bahco Laplander saw to cut a off a chunk of birch.

Next up it was the Mora Clipper’s turn to take off the bark and split the wood down to a manageable thickness.

I then spent a bit of time whittling down one of the pieces only to then split the next side straight down the middle to give me two equal and flatter pieces.

It was now time to get the SAK scales, Vic Waiter, and draw round them using a Sharpie marker onto the wood.

I used my little hobby vice to hold the wood while I used the Laplander saw to cut off the excess wood then I used the Clipper to whittle down to the marker lines.

To come I will look to drill out the holes and smooth the scales down further.

Thanks Paul, yeah the paracord wrap on the Mora is really there to keep the knife retained in the sheath, after years of use the sheath retention became loose. It makes the knife thicker but still quite comfortable to use. Gotta love the Clipper.  :)

Thanks Syph007, its been fun so far, done a bit more whittling this afternoon. Got some work still to do before I attempt to drill the holes.

Cheers mate . The wood is not that dry, so chance of warping is very high, but as I say its a trial run  ;).

Pretty sweet mate!!  :tu:   I'm looking forward for the next batch of pics, specially knowing that it was made with the same birch you used for that spoon! The wind may have been a problem in a certain way but it was something good in another! ::)
Best wishes my friend!!!

Birch might not be the hardest or the fanciest, but this will have a more impressive tale to tell.
