Military vehicle show and swap meet in Augusta NJ
on: April 14, 2012, 01:52:34 AM
I don't know who here would be able to make it easily, but there is a military vehicle show and swap meet at the Sussex County Fairgrounds April 28-29.  Lots of really neat stuff on display, and there is a large setup of tables, tents, and booths selling all sorts of things from military surplus to custom knives.  I've gone for the past two years and it's really a great time.  If anyone makes it, look for a guy in a Devils hat, probably smoking a corncob pipe, and say hello.  :)

Looks like a lot of fun- kind of like an airshow without the load noise and sore neck!  :D

Question for you JD; what are some of the smaller-sized military 4wd truck / utility vehicles brands out there?  Unimog comes to mind, but there aren't any listed for sale around here. So what are some of the others I can do a search for?

Unimogs are far from small...

I can't comment on what the US military is using, but up here there are a variety of pickups, mostly diesels that are in service.  More common to the military around here are the Mercedes G Wagons and the Iltis, originally made by VW, then more recently by Bombardier.

You might also want to look up OshKosh trucks as they have some neat toys!

Honestly, Bob, this isn't my field of expertise.  AM General has always made a lot of vehicles for the US military, though I'm sure that most of them for sale nowadays are HMMWVs.  Ford, AM General, and Kaiser made the M151, the last military jeep.  Try searching for "M-series vehicles" for sale and you should find what you are looking for.  Also try "CUCV" for "Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle".  Like Grant stated above, a lot of US vehicles are actually government models of everyday GM, Ford, or Chrysler products.  On Saturday I'm going up to the show with a friend of mine in his M1009.  NEVER call it a Blazer around him!  :twak:  ;)

Ahh, here's the one I was thinking of: the Volvo Laplander :tu:

Our friend Turnstone wrote a nice piece on them awhile back, complete with lots of photos:

I've been wondering that too. I miss her- she always had good info and insights to share.

I hope all is well with her wherever she is.

Here's a couple of new toys for the military that came off the ship today.  Military G Wagon and a Unimog.

Oooh, grab a Unimog for me next time they have an extra one. I have a swamp out back that's just begging to be conquered. :)

I actually know a guy in Toronto with about 13 of them.  I'm sure he'd consider parting with one if you are serious!  :D

The Laplanders are really nice, a way more realistic size I figure. Bob have you found any good sites on them? I'd like to get one, two seated and outfit the back like a bunk or kitchen maybe. Really the possibilities are endless.

Stay multi my friends

Yeah, that's about what I was thinking too. :) The size seems more appropriate for my tight swamp roads than the big Unimog trucks.

Another nice looking one I found while searching the websites is this Pinzgauer

The 6x6 looks especially badass

:pok: you may have a bit of a problem getting it from its owner..

j-sews, the pinzqauer has very clever suspension and weight distribution making it really good off road, especially the 6 wheel version.

They also ride very smoothly off road.

I would suggest getting the civilian version which has more (a bit more) equipment and better finish, though their main problems is that they are expensive and slow on the road.

I dunno- Mr T is in his 60's now and apparently spends all his time playing WoW, while Bob can crash a multitool with his bare hands!

My money is on Bob for this one!

Well, that sure was a good time.  Lots of neat stuff on display, and I found a few new sharp and shinys for the collection.  :)  A US Army "demo" knife made by Imperial in 1961 tops the list.  I'll post pics in the appropriate forums later.
