Talked a friend into getting a Crosscut

I was in a discussion the other day with my friends, and the guy I already convinced to carry a Crosscut and I were showing them off to another friend. The new guy pulls out his Case slipjoint, which had been his father's. I offer to clean/sharpen his knife for him, and in the mean time, I'd loan him something to replace it.

Yesterday, I brought a Micra, my old Crosscut, and a Vic Rambler over for him to check out. He chose the Crosscut. Since I've replaced it with a newer one already, I told him he could keep it.

So... still spreading the word of the Crosscut.

And if the guys at SOG ever read this, and feel a burning need to reward my diligence, a TiNi Crosscut would do just fine.

I stopped carrying mine. The weight didn't justify the only useful thing on it (the scissors)...

This is a very interesting thread. I've had a Crosscut for about a year now, having bought it as something to carry instead of my Micra, which is now ten years old and an object that I just don't want to lose - particularly when the Micra's been discontinued in the UK. To me the Crosscut and the Micra are pretty well matched but I do like the Crosscut's scissors and, as a fully paid up, card-carrying beardie, I use them a lot for adhoc beard trimming and moustache alignment. The one issue I have with the Crosscut is that it's bottle opener is awful- it's a bottle opener that's designed to ensure you remain thirsty. Having said that, this is not really big issue and the quality of the scissors more than makes up for the poor bottle opener. I also like the fact that the Crosscut's an old style 'in board' tool that looks the way I think small multitools should look and I glad that it's receiving proper attention.

I agree about the bad cap lifter on the Crosscut, but I find it exactly as effective as that on a Micra, which is to say both are pretty bad. However, that just means having to pull three of the dentitions on the cap before it pops off. It still functions, just slowly.

And, as a status report, the new Crosscut I got is doing its job as expected.

Yes, the Micra's bottle opener isn't great and I always took a few tries to open a bottle with it. However, I got no where at all when I tried the Crosscut's opener, which isn't able to keep the bottle top in place. so the lip of the opener can't get a purchase it. Having said that, I'll be taking the Crosscut on holiday with me in a couple of weeks because it is a good tool, so good that the (in my experience) ineffectual bottle opener is really emphasised by the overall quality of the tool.

Huh... that's weird. The bottle opener on both of the Crosscuts I've owned works the same as on the two Micras I've owned.

EDIT: I test bottle openers early and often on my tools.

As I mentioned earlier, I took the Crosscut on holiday with me and have come away with a great deal of respect for its scissors' ability. While out walking, I ended up using the tool to cut brambles (up to half an inch thick) to clear a way through over-grown foot paths in Wales. I've started to think of the Crosscut's scissors as mini-shears as a result, and I don't know anything in its class that can beat them for serious cutting work.

I bought a crosscut last year, I still carry the Micra or the Vic Classic. I don't feel like the quality or perceived quality is there. It just seems like a made in China tool. I just bought a S44, hoping the quality is much better. Since reading this thread, I'll give the crosscut another shot, so we'll see.

I keep waffling on the Crosscut. Even the new one. Even with the faults of the 2.0 version, I still like a lot of stuff about it.

Having recently gotten both a Gerber Dime and Leatherman Squirt PS4, the fact that both are dinged up after only a few weeks worth of carry just smurfs me off. And the sad truth is to get the pliers, which I almost never need, I feel like I really lose a lot.

I started about a year ago to see if I could drastically improve my keychain tool. I'm not sure I could... except maybe to get an old version Crosscut in Titatium Nitride.

I have one

I carry it

I'm awaiting a Ti Ni Swisstech Microtech Plus to go with it to provide pliers and drivers

I haven't found a matching torch (flashlight) for it yet though
