That would be great. :tu: Haven't seen any guides on whittling the beautiful little wren either? :dunno:

If you don't know it, I can highly recommend an old book called "Whittling and woodcarving" by E. J. Tangermann. It's a treasure of knowledge. I found it as an interlibrary loan, and I keep on renewing it. Luckily, noone else seems to make reservations for this old gem. :D

Thanks for the heads up, looks like it might still be available to purchase, so will have a bit more of an investigation!

Stripped some bark of a branch, which is to become the next project. Not sure what it'll be though?

Some seem to turn out better than others. This one I think is quite good, but the tail branch has a crack in it. Will see if super glue works its magic...

It's way cool how you get so much personality out in these little birds. :o

I really like about whittling how, with some trial and error, perseverance and applied creativity, you can, by taking away small chips of a humble branch, bit by bit, create something beautiful, funny or useful. :tu:

Thanks Dane! I need to work out a good way to seal and paint them, I have some that I have taken all the bark off to see how they look. Trying to leave the bark on to simulate wings doesn't really match the right shape.
I'm also trying to distill it down to some simpler cuts first, then just some rounding to tidy up

I've never really painted any of my things. I sometimes give them linseed oil, but mostly just leave them as is. I like to follow how the  different wood changes when it dries. :)

So, what should have been a finger ring, became a wooden pearl for a lanyard instead. :dunno: :D

Thanks nate! This is my first ever attempt at one, after getting some off cuts from a wood supplier in town. This piece was a bit more rectangular than square. I should have trimmed down the ball more from the top and bottom before releasing from the sides, but it mostly goes up and down without getting stuck. Just need to clean it up, now!

I have bought a copy of this one, and also an original print of the 1930s "The Art of Whittling" by Walter L Faurot

Nice. :tu: How do you like it? And can you recommend that other one? It looks lovely. I love old books on whittling, or, to be fair, on any good old crafts to be honest. :D

Did some curls with the Ranger today, making a couple of fire feathers to light the fireplace. The blade on the Ranger's are awesome for that type of work. Sadly no photo of the curls. But a vanity shot in a stump, I did manage to take. ::)

Those scales are actually quite well camouflaged, amIright? :o I thought I'd better put a colorful lanyard on it soon enough. As not to loose it outside.

No doubt.

I’m pretty convinced that camo knives are a plot by the marketing departments.  We drop them in the woods and can’t find them, and then have to buy replacements.

I'm sure you're right, Nate. But then it is totally unfair, when not only do they close the entire company, but then the buyer of said company also have the nerve to discontinue the SAK in question.

Got the Art of Whittling in the post last week. For a 95 year old book it is in excellent condition, however it smells very musty. I currently have it in a cardboard box with some bicarb soda to try and dray the smell out. In terms of instructional, it is probably a bit more high level than detailed. It is still a very nice reference and inspiration for some of the things I haven't seen much elsewhere, like the scissors and pliers, chains balls in cages etc. Apparently more recent reprints may have improved instructions, so may even be worth getting hold of one as well.
It is also smaller than I thought it would be, but that's OK!

Still waiting for Whittling and Woodcarving book, which has been held up in Melbourne over Easter
