This is pretty much what I did with Molly.  If she pulled past; stop, turn her head (gently using the lead) from a straight pull into a inward circle, reset at heal and walk on.  Sooner or later they'll work out that the only way to get anywhere is not to pull.  Molly still needs reminding from time to time as things can still get exciting and interesting but for the most part she's fine.  Oh, and teaching the command "heal" both on and off the lead I've found useful.

We’ve been doing something pretty much the same, and it’s calmed him down a little but he has his normal take offs and stop to sniff moments!
