Outbid on an old multi
on: April 23, 2012, 04:28:35 AM
So you guys probably know by now that I have a soft spot for old before-Leatherman gadgets that are pliery, and have foldy things coming off them. So imagine how excited I was to find this old gizmo, listed for sale on an auction site that caters to corkscrew collectors: :)

According to the auction it is called a Vise-O-Lift, and was patented in the U.S. in 1933. Pliery? Check. Foldy thing? Check. (the corkscrew) So I goes ahead and registers on the site like a good fellow, and patiently wait for the auction to draw near its completion time. Which was today. But by around noon, I was beginning to be disturbed to see the bidding approaching the $300 mark. :-\ But then it kept going up........finally climaxing somewhat north of $1600! :ahhh

Who the h*ll bids so high for a such a thing? Freakin' crazy corkscrew collectors. :P

Wow!  That is an odd one. Reading the description helps to figure out it multi-abilities. Still it said the "Starting" bid was $250! :o

I would have liked to seen more pictures. That tool looks scary to use. However I did learn some new vocabulary to impress the ladies at social events.

"Hey! Do you have a corkscrew on you?"

"Hmm. A corkscrew... OH! You mean a wire helix? Of course. Why didn't you say so."   ::)

All the cool kids use a wire helix...
If you took all the intestines out of your body and stretched them end to end... you would die.

This might sound a bit silly, but at $1600 sales price, I could imagine folks making forgeries of this thing for a tidy profit.

Two guys in a holding cell...
Guy #1: I'm in for murder. What are you in for?
Guy #2: Forging copies of multitools.

Holy smurfballs bob that's a ton!  Weird tool, pretty awesome cool factor but I doubt I'd have given it a second look even at $250.

Maybe something like this really happened, cause in the patent the multitool doesn't have a Corkscrew.. Was it added at the 11th hour by the manufacturer ? or by a forger for the auction ?  Another unsolved Multitool Mystery..

Dang! :bnghd:

So the very next weekend (this corkscrew website apparently only does two two-weekend auctions per year) I have my eye set on this little beauty, a combination cartridge extractor / whistle / corkscrew / cigar cutter: 8)

Pretty sweet old antique multitool right? But the stupid thing sells for $1373.18!!! :o :o :o

What's wrong with these people?? :ahhh

Bob, those folks seem to have very deep pockets. But at those prices they can only afford to have two auctions a year. The tool looks like a tool no proper country gentleman would take the field with out one of those in his kit.   :)

I think Bob was bidding on a few of those machines too, trying to get them out of circulation... too bad he was outbid on them though... :P

Thanks for the link to the site .... my wallet may not be so happy :)

Looking at the history of sales these corkscrew collectors are ..... whats the polite word .... dedicated :) there are some truly huge prices paid for some of the old patent ones.

But some of the Knifes (with corkscrew) seem very affordable ... I think I should join up .... just to keep an eye on sales ....not to spend anything .... that would be wrong :)

Yes, I know what you mean about the knives. I did end up buying this one. It has a wire snipper on the end, with a spring loaded handle that locks closed, along with a knife blade and a corkscrew :)
