New Surge.
on: May 30, 2012, 05:36:24 AM
Got my new LM Surge today...should I open it ? The reason I ask is, I'm more or less a collector. I have 2 or 3 LM's that I keep handy for EDC, as well as 1 or 2 Gerber MT's.

Observing the tool while still inside the packaging, it looks to be a fine MT. I'm leaning towards not opening it...but just for the fun of it...I'll let the board decide  :climber:

Don't open it Irish! The moment you open it, you'll regret it. :D :D

Seriously, the Surge is a big and heavy duty tool designed for heavy use. Everyone here is just like you, a collector/user. Many edc the surge, but I don't. I carry the size and weight of the charge or wave. Congrats on your new tool!

I say open it.  These are tools, not stamps!  Even Chako, the definition of collector, has most of his tools sitting in a toolbox without packaging.  If it were a really rare retired model, I could see leaving it sealed, but not a model that's still in production with no retirement in the foreseeable future.

Plus, there's always the possibility that you will decide to carry it one day, and that's a fun thing all in itself.

Why not open a package of a Surge? It is a great tool to use and not rare at all. Use it and enjoy it!

There were many Surges sold so they are by no means rare.   I had two Surges but didn't care for them so I gave one away and sold the other.

I say open it and lets all hope that Leatherman will one day upgrade the plier head of the current incarnation of the Surge with that of the ST300!!

The board has decided...I opened my new Surge  :sak: After opening, I proceeded to spray the tool down with Ballistol and letting it  soak/set-up. I then used my air compressor to blow off the excess.

This might seem silly to some...but I find that doing this, helps to preserve the tool better. I might never use the tool as designed...heck...I might never even use it

Thank you all for the votes to open. Oh...I forgot to mention that I used my Leatherman Sidekick to open the package  :D.

You need to use that new tool.  I've put together a comprehensive recovery program for you, and if you follow it to the letter, there is hope for you...

Step 1:  Get a shovel, dig a hole outside and toss the Surge into the hole.

Step 2:  Fill the hole in with dirt

Step 3:  Stomp on the hole

Step 4:  Dig up the Surge

Step 5:  Don't even wipe off the dirt, just throw it in its sheath and wear it on your belt.

Now you and your Surge are ready for anything.  Just don't forget to actually use the Surge when needed.
