Huntsman Bubinga
on: May 04, 2012, 02:00:42 PM
Victorinox recently produced another one of its special editions, the Bubinga Huntsman, 1.3713.BU. The scales of this model are derived from Bubinga wood from Gabon. The plant is native to both Africa and South America and its timber is considered a luxury wood. Lexus uses it as interior trimming on some of its more expensive cars.

The Bubinga Huntsman was made exclusively for the French market. A thousand were produced each with its own serial number etched horizontally on the main blade, nnnn/1000. The knife comes with a brown leather pouch in a red presentation box, included within is a certificate of authenticity with a printed serial number matching the blade. It’s fitted with the usual standard Victorinox Huntsman tools and accessories except there is no hole for the stainless steel pin. The Vic logo is branded on the front scale. The cost is about €50.

Both the SwissChamp and the Spartan both have models that are also produced with wood but, the gods at Ibach say the Huntsman has the real thing, the luxury wood, so who are we mere mortals to question their expertise.

Really beautiful wood. However, there are no sources of a sustainable source. In a limited run of 1,000, it's probably a non-issue, as they probably bought scraps of it from Lexus or someone else, hence the limited edition.

I'd like to see more options for wood-handled SAKs in the future. (made from sustainably-harvested wood)

Actually, it makes me realize that I do have some woodworking skill, and I should just do it myself.  :-\  The trick is the branding of the swiss cross and shield. I'm not that good in woodburning.

hmm... a damascus limited edition in 45000 year old kuari or logs harvested from flooded dams would be awesome

Boker has at least one model available with mammoth tusk ivory scales. It is a very basic knife, and goes for a few hundred dollars, I think. This is a neat idea, and since they're extinct, it is just a matter of having the material.

What a beautiful Huntsman! I own an old Remington Jumbo Trapper with Bubinga wood handles.
It's the one on the far left. The other 3 are done in Cocobolo...

It's a beautiful wood! I would love to have a Huntsman with those Bubinga wood handles! I'm sure they must go for a very high premium? Any idea what these knives might sell for in the French market? I'll keep my eyes opened in the secondary market. Perhaps some may make it across the pond? I doubt that I could afford it, though? I guess it doesn't hurt to dream. *sigh*

Very nice knives.
The Cocobolo wood reminds me of some very nice S&W 44 Magnum grips I still own.

I heard at least part of that will come true in 2012... I'd love an ancient Kauri handled SAK... but that might be expecting too much.... but.... SAKs last a long time, it would be a great use for this wood.

Beautiful looking knife!  :tu:

At one time Wenger offered some bubinga handled knives in conjunction with EKA of Sweden.

Yes. Its called the Executive Major. Think I picked it up from an online dealer here in the US who was importing a lot of odd-ball stuff from Europe that wasn't normally being brought in.. Basically its a Traveller.

Karl

It may have come from World Knives, though they don't currently offer it.
