Tofty's XR-E Aspheric Thrower
on: June 07, 2012, 08:22:35 PM
Hey all,
Just finished my first tight beam thrower.
It's made using a 27.5mm Ahorton aspheric lens, a Cree XR-E R2 EZ900 pill driven at 2.1A from Vinh (cpf), all in a Skyray host with mcclicky tail switch, running off a 18650.
In fact the only work that needed doing was to remove the original lens lip in the head, make two stainless steel spacer for the lens and make a threaded pill holder out of copper and brass.
The pill is threaded all the way down it's body so the copper holder was also fully threaded, allowing the pill to be finely adjusted relative to the lens then locked in place with a threaded brass ring nut from above.

Not much to look at but thats not what it's for.

The Skyray host has a straight sided, pretty much cylindrical drop-in cavity which means making drop-ins for it is much simpler than for the P60 cavities in the surefires.

Took it out in the dark and all i can really say is it threw alot further than my ultrafire WF-501B XM-L T6, i'll get a chance to test it against other lights in a week or so.
I do really like it though, one of my better value mods.

Looking good, love that heatsink design. KISS engineering spot on.

I might even get to see this light in a couple of weeks   :D

Like a complete plum i forgot to get any beam shots but more importantly i missed the opportunity to do a back-to-back beam test against BLUE LEDs OMG Lumens EDC which is the most revelant as it's exactly the same size and claims incredible throw.
As all the other throwers were larger, or at least had larger optics i'd say mine was one of the least throwy throwers there.
Probably get about 300 yards on a clear night.
