Binder Clips: good poor-man's solution to pocket clip?

I have seen some references to small binder clips being used for pocket clips on knives that don't already have them. So, yesterday, I bought a box of 12 little (3/4") clips for $1 (big spender!). I got one home, put it on my Trekker, and gave it a try. 'Installing' the clip is easy. you just squeeze one handle until it comes out of its brackets, slide the knife's split ring on and replace the handle. No need to fight the split ring.

It seemed to work pretty well. Some care must be taken with the inside folding handle, so it's not as fast or easy as a dedicated solution, but it's a very affordable solution, IMO.

I've now stuck 4 in my purse for general use.

Has anyone else tried this?

I have seen several references to the TEC Accessories P-7 Suspension Clip, and while it's nice, there's no way in smurfin' smurf I'm paying that kind of money for a bent piece of metal. I don't pocket carry very often, but do occasionally. I'm thinking I can put up with the slight inconvenience for as often as I need this function.

I haven't tried that particular method. Big paper clips might work, or it's fairly easy to bend bits of metal yourself if you can find some useful bits to play with.

The P-7 clip is a lot for what it is, but they are pretty good.

Oh, I'm not doubting that the P-7 is a great clip. I just don't think it's $12 great (at least not for me). I could get a used VIC Camper or Tinker for less from EDCSource.com if that puts it into perspective.

If you pocket carry all the time, it might well be worth it. As little as I would use it, I don't think the cost is justified. I CAN justify $1 for 12 little clips.

I haven't used this method, but I use common paper clips all the time as a cheap way to secure my netbook power lead to a desk pad. To me, binder clips actually seems even more useful to for some extra organisation inside a bag than as a pocket clip as such.

Well do you have junk steak knives? Then you got your own clip. 



Binder clips however, are great in keeping headphone untangled in pocket, better than any commercial solutions I've tried.

Lynn , if you wan't a classy dangler clip , buy an old sterling silver tea spoon at a yard sale , heat bend it , drill it , polish it - looks classy as all get out !

here's my diy suspension clips...



they started as stainless teaspoons that weren't getting any use here at home. the teaspoons were maleable enough that any kind of heating wasn't necessary for bending but it was a major pain to drill holes in them with a dremel.

I carried my Trekker all day yesterday in-pocket (electrical assistant duties) with the binder clip as a pocket clip.

It works great for keeping the knife in place. It's a little stabby for reaching into your pocket quickly.

It worked okay for a day. I wouldn't want to EDC it that way.

Binder clips have lots of square corners , in the pocket , rust might be a issue .

 The earrings are very very shiny but I can't capture them in a picture
 Apparently you can buy the little hook things to finish them off, they look a bit big to me but we will see.....

Also there are a few different ones from tandy leather company.  Search tandy leather spring clips.  I got a few on ebay.  That being said I need to hit up a yard sale or salve army and get some spoons. Those look great!
