knife blade and combination tool rubbing.
on: July 21, 2012, 05:25:48 PM
Anyone else notice any slight rubbing between the combinationn tool and the knife blade on the Scientist?  When I open the combination tool using the thumb nail slot, the ridge line on the inside of the combo tool lightly rubs against the blade causing some light scratches in the blade.  I can open the combo tool and lightly push the main blade with my other thumb to prevent the rubbing, but I wont worry about it if this is a common issue.  I've also added a light coat of oil on each surface to reduce the friction.  Again the whole combo tool isn't rubbing, but its the most prominent ridge line.  Thanks in advance.  I can take photos if needed

I've got a Pioneer Rancher where the pruning blade rubs against the main blade. At first I thought it was a one-off defect, so I returned it (bought it NIB from an Amazon seller) and got another new one in exchange. The second was slightly better, but still rubs. I figure that must just be the way they are sometimes. Doesn't affect usage any, but I would think that rubbing like that would be bad over time.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

Nail files are the worst.  Cadet, Tourist and variety of Wenger models all scratch up the spine of the large blade.

My Cadet does it, but I figure for fitting that much function in that thin a space, a little touching isn't that bad.

Well, at least it's only a cosmetic problem. In time it will fix itself without any negative consequences for the usability of the tool. I've read that avoiding tool rubbing is yet another reason many knife makers add swedges. IIRC, one of the Bose guys claimed people cared less about tools rubbing together back when most knives sold were destined for very hard use, since it disappears after a while as the steel is ground down and usability isn't affected, but a e.g. collector nowadays will notice it and will be irritated. Obviously, the rubbing marks certainly aren't to everybody's taste.

Personally, for instance (too much) bladeplay is a dealbreaker, but minimal tool rubbing doesn't worry me.
