Hardwood Huntsman and Spartan
on: June 23, 2012, 09:30:31 PM
Relatively inexpensive SAKs (comparable with cellidor versions), still available new for sale today, wrapped in solid albeit thin wood handles with tweezers and toothpick.

There is also a SwissChamp dressed in the exact same scales but this post is dedicated to its lighter brothers.

These scales are as mentioned solid, not hollow like the current cellidor ones for 91 mm. They are also profiled (sculpted) on their inside face in order to fit as best as possible.

Again, these are Victorinox scales, not custom.

Mounted not just snap-in as cellidor and nylon but with the use a bit of glue on the rivet ends (not a continous glue layer as for example on the rosewood scaled 91mm).

Here's an assortment of standard and custom wood handles. A couple of the customs came from Scibeer. A few came from shops and other were picked up on ebay. There are a number of people out there doing very nice work.

Very nice collection!

And is spot on, I saw some amazing work here. These mundane mass produced 'hardwood' (they look oak, I may be wrong) scales cannot compare but they are good to be appreciated for what they are, IMHO. The Vic rosewood is on another level and is also helped by the thicker aluminium liners they are fixed on (you probably noticed that with the exception of the hardwood SwissChamp all other "exotic" SwissChamps apparently come with the thicker exterior liners; I also noticed the same liners on the 2011 Damascus Climber, nice ebony scales there).

I'm always amazed by the work people do to these 'ordinary' knives to turn them in to something very special

There's some lovely scales there ColoSwiss  :tu:
