Old Swiss knife stamp is fading.
on: June 24, 2012, 05:06:27 PM
Hi

I got a old Swiss knife. The Victoria on the back of the main blade and the Swiss made on the can opener is fading away.

Can I fix this? I was wondering if the key makers in the mail can fix it or might ruin it?

Also its small blade tip is broken. How would I fix that?

Pictures.

There is also a bit of glue on the Vic logo. How would I go about removing that with out damaging the scales/logo?

Messing with the maker's marks would be an absolute no no.

It's not fading. It just wasn't stamped very deep originally and when polished some of it wore away. I have old knives NIB that look like this. This knife is from the late 1940s - made when Victorinox was very much a manual labor kind of place. This kind of thing is normal.

Regarding the pen blade, the only real option to fix is the re-profile slightly. If you don't want to do it, and decent knife shop can for you.

I'm trying to make it look new.

The swiss made writing is almost gone! :o

Don't try too hard- lost of old guns and knifes have been made into scrap metal  by people trying to "restore" them.

The shoe fixer/key maker in the malls should be about to do it? Would they be able to make it look like it was a factory edge?

There is nothing I can do to make the swiss made logo come back to life?

How would I remove a small bit of glue on the scales?

How would I remove small dents and polish the scales?

Thanks for the help.

personally I wouldn't trust the key guys,  :ahhh

As this knife is not 'mint' I would buy a Lansky sharpening system and do the blade myself (practice on some other knives first)

This might help with your cleaning/polishing  :salute:

I got a can of Brasso. On the can it says for metals.

I assume it won't hurt the plastic scales?

Yes Brasso will work  :tu: try it by hand on a cloth, a dremel can sometimes 'dig' a hole

 ???
I'm not sure but the Brasso seems to strip the plastic a bit and not add much shine.

I'm using a bit of old rag.

I might see what the local hardware shop got.

Um  I have just tried it on some random scales that were lying around here

 :tu:

Car polish works (called T-cut here)  :salute:
Polishing compound works (if you are going to use it on a 'mop' be very gentle   :dwts: )
You can try tooth paste, I'm told it works  :tu:

I think I was expecting better results.

When you put the brasso on to a cloth does little yellow ball things(very small) appears on the cloth?
The can has been in the cupboard for years.

If the scales are real bad, you will have to start with sand paper. Then keep going up in grit until the polish can work.

My brasso is approx 27 years old  :-[ I have dropped a metal nut in the tin so it mixes it up a bit when I shake it   ;)

Do you have anymore pictures of the scales please

definitely avoid the key guys in the mall, the only person you can trust sharpening a knife is yourself, that is, once you have got yourself a sharpening kit and practiced a lot on some old knives.

Didn't realise you posted(forgot about this thread ).

Any way if you want to see the scales I added a pic.

Good idea on the brasso. I think mine is only ten years old and made in spain ;)

Its a lovely knife.

I wouldn't use anything stronger than brasso as I think they look great how they are, as said above you might ruin how they look with too much polishing  :tu:

I don't know what tools you have available but I would re-profile the blade like this (you can use an oil stone) and then sharpen the blade
