Skeletool Use Notes
on: January 30, 2008, 04:49:04 PM
I thought I'd make a thread like the Tales of the Tool thread where I could tell you guys what I'm using the Skeletool for & how well it works.  That might help you all decide if it's all I've said it was.

Used the Skeletool yesterday to prep some veggies & fruit for lunch.  The blade is a little bit thicker all the way to the bevel than other Leatherman knives for strength, so it doesn't slice through as well as a thinner blade.  It's plenty sharp though.

Used it to open mail.  Leatherman's way they finish a blade makes it almost serrated in feel, so it cuts through paper very well & keeps the edge better than my Kabar Dozier I was using for this last week.

Used it to cut some picture wire & hang a couple pictures.  Being that the cutting surface is very small it doesn't do very well at cutting stranded wire, but very few multitools do.  I ended up using a sidecutter which made short work of it.  Also turned one of the hanging nails with the pliers since it was too close to the ceiling to swing a hammer.  You can grip pretty hard on the narrow gripping surface, but eventually it will cut into your hand a bit.

Used it to open a (root) beer.  The bottle opener is very stout & gets the cap on the first try every time.  I said in my review that the back butt of the blade cuts into the hand a bit, & I found this again to be true.  It has to stick out as far as it does to engage the stop, & the stop has to be that far out to allow for the thickness of the blade when closed.  That's also why it cuts into your hand when you put your hand in the pocket where it's clipped.  I could probably shift it in my hand a little when I open a bottle to avoid pushing the fleshy part of the inside of the thumb against the blade butt.  This is the only real complaint I have with this tool.

I smoothed off the butt of the blade a bit & it doesn't bite into my hand as much now.  I remember taking a Dremel to my PST in the same way years ago.

Tom, have you encountered any times since carrying the Skeletool where you wish you had your Charge for the extra implements?

Not really.  It's lacking the saw, file, serrated blade, scissors, & small screwdrivers.  I use the PE blade & screwdrivers the most, & that's what the Skeletool has.  The lack of bulk means I'll carry the Skeletool at times I wouldn't carry the Charge.

From the Leatherman site about the Skeletool:

"Removable pocket clip means it easily clips onto a belt, pack, or vest—no sheath required."

Used my Skeletool to change a hacksaw blade & bend another - worked great.

One funny thing since it has a spare blade holder - I can't decide whether to carry two different bits or two of the same for backup.  I wish LM made a bit with regular & very small slotted & another with Phillips no 2 or the 1-2 they make with a small Phillips no 0.  I find myself wanting to be able to adjust regular things & fine things like electronics or eyeglasses.  I've also tried to find a way to mount the LM mini screwdriver bit on the Skeletool for this.

I didn't keep up this thread very well, huh?  I've been using the Skeletool a lot for general use & have nothing but good to say so far.  Everyone I've shown it to (who knows tools) has been duly impressed.

I did get a couple new pairs of Levi's lately though, & the butt of the blade is cutting into my hand even worse when I try to get my keys out of the same pocket.  I've thought about trying to mount a pocket clip to the carabiner end of the tool - as it is much thinner & smoother to get past.  Using the carabiner clipped to the pocket as I showed in my review is sometimes difficult to unclip with the seam at the edge of the pocket.

Used the Skeletool to take apart some old fencing yesterday - mostly long screws.  It works pretty well in the extended mode as a revolving screwdriver.  I really wished it had a ratchet though when extracting several long screws.

Which "extended mode" do you find to be the most comfortable when driving screws? It's totally weird to my hand when the pliers are folded to the carabiner side.

I like it better with the pliers folded to the knife/bit driver side. :)

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

It really doesn't seem to matter to me.  Sometimes I want to be choked up nearer the bit & sometimes more toward the back or the carabiner.  I'd prefer to have it at 90 degrees with a ratchet.
