Help me fix a loose scissors screw.
on:
July 27, 2012, 08:02:37 AM
Hi all... the scissors in the pre-'05 Explorer I got recently keeps working its screw loose (yeah, I know, laugh it up...
). I've tightened it but every time I try to use the scissors, just a few cuts with them loosens it back up and the blades aren't close enough together to cut much of anything.
Any suggestions on how to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated.

A spot of thread lock maybe to keep the screw tight ?
It worked for a bit on my old champ which did this, - until it got replaced when I sent it to repair under Vic warranty, so unsure how good it would be long term.

I did the same thing with a Super Time Keeper. Worked for years.

"The Vic scissors used to be held together with a small screw, and
the Wengers still are. The screw can be tightened with the tip of a tweezer
arm, but this can bend the tweezer. A very small screwdriver, like the miniscrewdriver
that fits in the corkscrew, is better. Not too tight; just take up
the slack. The scissors should still be easy to use. Now turn the scissors
over, the screw-head on a small anvil, (like, say, the face of a second hammer),
and tap the slightly-protruding other end of the screw in the center
once with a small punch (or hard concrete nail) and a hammer to set the
screw a bit in the hope that it doesn’t loosen again. A small drop of clear
fingernail polish can also hold it for a while."

I think I'd go with green Loctite before I resorted to peening the end of the screw.

I've been using red loctite on the screw and reassembling and haven't had an issue since.
I actually prefer the screw to the rivet as I can take them apart to clean, polish and sharpen, and then set the tension perfectly. Rivet scissors I find bind up after awhile and some cant be salvaged. I can always repair the screw type.
I wouldn't peen a screw for many reasons, that's not a good idea.

You might be right. Like closing up the screw-head slot from peening? Or making the screw impossible to remove because of the peened end?

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to pick up some red Loctite and try that.

If you don't want to pick up a whole bottle to only use 0.1 ml, a dab of superglue works fine too.

A drop of superglue on the back side of the screw seems to have done the trick... thanks!

No problem, if it's loose again just put it on the thread as you would loctite, I've done it on a few things and it holds fine.

If the problem reappears, maybe a new screw does the trick?!
They were avalable as spares.

That's good to know... it seems fine for now though.
