Looking for advice/suggestions for OPMTs
on: July 19, 2012, 04:21:18 PM
Greetings! I'm an amateurish edc'er looking for recommendations.

I am looking to buy a new one piece multitool for my keychain that fulfills three roles:
-snag edge/box ripper
-bottle opener
-TSA safe

I currently own a brewzer, and while I am mostly satisfied with it, I find the bottle opener function more difficult than I would like. The small surface width of the lower edge makes it a bit difficult for my use.

In general, I'm looking for something to open bottles, rip open packages/tape, and not worry about when I fly. I've looked around, but haven't been able to find many tools with the snag edge/box ripper. My eye is on TT Pocket Tools and, particularly, the Skull Tool Gen 3 (supposedly has a bottle opener) and the keeper/chopper/capper. I'm a bit reluctant to get the chopper, as the bottle opener doesn't look very easy to use while keychained. That said, I really like the grip assistants that the chopper and the ilk feature.

I would like to stay away from the more expensive items like the Atwoods, as I'd like to keep this banging around for everyday use without concern. Plus I figure I'd leave those for the real collectors/enthusiasts! :P Hoping to not go too expensive, but if something was perfect, I'd drop money on it.

Thank you for your time and help!

Welcome to the forum and to the world of EDC and pocket tools!  I'm defnetly not the best person to help you with your quest, but considering your needs the TT Pocket Tools are probably the best option. You could if possible try this: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,37819.msg607927.html#msg607927

I still think the Pockettool X Piranha is an excellent option.  Yes, it has more tools on it and is larger, but not keychain friendly.  If you want smaller, the TT Keeper or Chopper are both excellent choices.

Gerber Shard is another option, but it's not really designed for opening boxes.

Although the Gerber Shard hasn't got a cutting notch like the Brewzer or the TT Skulls, the 'screwdriver' tips on the Shard can be used to break tape quite well.  I don't think it's as good as the Brewer or the TT tools in this respect but it will do the job.

As a I mainly use OPMTs for prying in one form or another, I should also mention the County Comm Pico Widgy pry bar, which I now keep on my keys for use at work.  Ok, there's no bottle opener, which might well disqualify it - and as a UK resident, I won't make any claims about TSA compliance - but it's a cheap good tool for getting through tape and levering open stubborn boxes.
