All Roads Lead to a SAK
on: August 14, 2012, 06:10:48 AM
When i started collecting multis three months ago, I thought if it wasn't plier-based, it wasn't worth my time. But since i realized that in my everyday life, pliers are just added weight, i decided I'd try an SAK after finding three on ebay for $22 shipped. I realized that all i need for school are a knife for food prep and small woodwork, and a small saw for fire etc. SAKs are the obvious choice, and I am a total convert. Following are pics of my small, but useful :D collection, and my first three SAKs. If you know what models any are, please tell me, as i am still pretty helpless with the different models. (also, i LOVE alox, and want a farmer, but haven't had the drive to get one yet. i have a GAK in the mail.)

I've noticed I've been carrying SAKs more often.  But then, thanks to my left foot being operated, the days of my building a ship(Nimitz Class), in the middle of the jungle, are pretty much over

I have to agree with you. I have traded away all but one of my pliers based tools and just need to find a home for it. For me a sak is the way to go and when I need pliers I just use a real pair.

I often carry a SAK, but I always carry a MT.  To me, the pliers are for much more than bolt-turning.  They're an extra set of fingers, used a half dozen times a day at least.  From pulling the toaster tray out when there is no oven mitt handy, to squeezing a spring when reassembling a paintball marker.  I regret every single time that I don't have them on me.

I usually have one one me even if I am carrying a pliers based tool as well. Usually discontinued ones as it happens  ::)

However, I must confess that today (keychains excluded) I'm a Swiss-free-zone  (MP400 and Nieto slipjoint knife)

All Roads Lead to a SAK

Hmm....I crashed my scooter yesterday.... (don't worry, it's not the first time :P )
A roll of duct tape in the dash, a SAK in my pocket and all was quickly fixed to get me home save.
Besides the (inline) drivers, I was happy to have the little pliers for putting the plastic bodywork back in place and removing the snaped-off mirror.

My alox Soldier is in my pocket from pretty much when I get up, to when I go to bed.  I've been carrying my MP800 less lately, as I've been finding it a bit bulky on my belt with my phone and insulin pump.

A SAK is always part of my edc, usually along with a plier based multi and a dedicated folder. Today, inspired a bit by this thread, I left my ST200 and Kershaw Needs Work in my bag, and had only my Wenger Tradesman on me.  I did need larger pliers at one point, but I mean LARGER pliers.  The ST200 would have been useless in the situation.  Other than that, I got everything I needed to get done done with just the Tradesman with no problems.  Nice little change to my carry routine.  :tu:

There's a long thread over on Blade Forums asking about why people like SAKs so much.  It was kind of a troll, but my response as to why they're so popular was pretty simple.  About the only time I ever need pliers is when I'm working in the garage or the yard, so I will carry my S2 with me at those times.  But, at all other times, a SAK does more of the jobs I come across on a daily basis than any other tool, and does it in a smaller, lighter, and higher quality tool than pretty much anything else.

My SAK of choice for almost 9 months now has been the Vic Passenger. The inline phillips is a must for me, since in my environment, almost all repairs seem to involve phillips screws. I really love the blades on a SAK. They just cut so efficiently. I do like to keep them absurdly sharp. The other day I was having a burger at a pub with some folks I didn't know very well. At the end of the meal one of them wanted to keep the drawing he did on the thick, paper tablecloth. I pulled out the Passenger and opened the small blade; no one ran for cover or even called 911  I then held the paper up and traced the drawing like I was using a pen as it was cut cleanly and effortlessly. They both said, "Wow."

SAKs rock :tu:

Well, I do wish Victorinox would improve the tool set-up. Like having standard on all models the combo tool and inline phillips as opening layer. Or having the combo tool like on a Rambler. Plenty we have on our wish list.

Me thinks the factory makes more profit from selling watches and bags, rather then on our beloved Swiss Army Knife. Looks like Victorinox is not investing anymore in modern development of the Officers Knife.

What do you think?

Amen  :tu:

And the small Vic pliers do a decent job in a pinch, better then having nothing!
Same goes for the (alox) awl, really useable tool for all sorts.

Speaking of wishes for tool setups  :D, I wish vic would make an outdoor based tool, with no unnecessary tools (by my standards anyway), such as a 111mm with a large PE blade, a can opener, a wood saw, an awl, and a chisel/prybar/bottle opener  I know similar tools exist, but i'm not a fan of tools I don't use.

Last time I heard it was 50:50 between knives (kitchen cutlery and multitools included) and everything else (watches, suitcases, jackets...). The problem is, I suspect they see a lot more growth potential in the not-sharp segment. In Norway there is no such thing as a dedicated knife shop, and sporting goods stores and iron mongers carry fewer and fewer knives. When I was in Germany this summer, it seemed it is hard running a knife shop there. And just recently we had that sad episode with a forum member in NYC. Etc, etc.

Good thing you got home safely thanks to your custom alox, btw.  :tu:

Back on topic, I vary between carrying a SAK and a dedicated knife and a few tools, but the SAK is just so incredibly no-nonsense useful. Also, since I started carrying a Harvester, I've hardly carried another SAK. Perhaps I have finally found “my” SAK? I really hope not, that would be boring. :D

I've been wanting a good Outdoors dedicated SAK for a long time too... had a hard time so far, flip-flopped between my Ranger 179, my Work Champ, Outrider, and so on.

But, no more... I now have my perfect outdoors SAK, thanks to Steve!!!  He added a scissors/phillips layer to a standard Hunter for me.  The thing is great; all the tools I want, and nothing I don't need.  I use the inline phillips mainly as a marlin spike for working with cord, and it actually works pretty well for that.

Thanks!  I love having the separate serrated blade... I know it's supposed to be a gutting blade, but so far I've used it mostly for cord.  It's nice having the combo tool too, because I can't remember the last time I ever opened a can of food on an outdoors trip, and unlike the combo tools on the 91 mm frames, it's the full thickness of the layer, so I don't have to worry too much about using it for light prying tasks.  I'm sure the phillips driver will come in handy as a actual screwdriver at some point too.

Overall, it's smaller than my Ranger 179, lighter, has the same length of cutting edge (more including the gutting blade), the saw is only 1/4" shorter, and it has more implements as well.  I simply love this tool!  :D

Oh, and sorry for the thread derailment!  But, I guess in a way, this is an example of what SAKs are all about!   :tu:

Plier based tools live in my pack or briefcase . A Handyman rides in my pocket . As a bonus it has pliers , which are OK for delicate work , ie: pulling a jumper of a circut board , or grabbing a small nut .

Heinz, that is a very nice bit of kit! I decided the gak is probably the most useful edc for my school, but if I see a cheap farmer, I'll do my best to snag it, I love the compactness
