58mm SAK scissors as a backtool?
on: August 21, 2012, 04:31:39 AM

Has anyone thought of trying this? is it even remotely possible?

I was looking at a couple of SAKs the other day and noticed that the scissors on a 58mm are roughly the same length as the corkscrew on a 91mm.
This started the wheels turning, my least used tool on a SAK is the corkscrew and scissors are near the top of my "must have" list.

Those little classics are like cockroaches, they are everywhere and no-one seems to be able to get rid of them.  Buy a  confiscated SAK off eBay and you will probably end up with another classic creeping its way into your life.

Now I realise that as a backtool, a pair of scissors would be even less ergonomic than a backtool philips driver and they are dinky little scissors, but they would be better than no scissors at all...

I'm certainly not expecting a drop in fit, there would no doubt be much drilling, grinding, filing, blood and swearing involved. But I think I'm going to try...  even just to prove that it can't be done.

I remember someone doing that either on here or over at SOSAK, in place of the awl, IIRC.

Yep, I remember seeing that in this forum before. I remember it looking really awkward to use, but it's definitely doable. I'm more interested in having the 58mm replace the can opener. Grind a bit off the flat head, and there's more than enough room to fit it. It's even the same thickness... Now that I'd like to see!

Ah, now that's a better idea. Use a combo-tool or shape the caplifter to provide can opener duties as well and we have end mounted scissors with no loss of functionality of the SAK as a whole... think I need to pick up a few cheap beaters to experiment on.

Let the mayhem begin.  :sak:

You can't use a 58mm tool directly on a 91mm frame, you'd have to add a sleeve around it so that it would be the right size to actuate the back spring.  That, or custom spring with a thicker end to it.  This doesnt matter for addign it to the backside, which is the only place ive seen it added so far.  Totally possible, but just more work than slapping it in.

That's what I was thinking, making a sleeve out of some scrap metal and then just JB-welding it to the scissors. A custom backspring would be nice though  :tu:

It was done but I can't remember where I saw it. Maybe a scissor spring cause the hook is close to the right size. However the spring, on the inside, would have to ground to hold a different tool.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

If I was to try, id use a scrap tool from a 91, and cut out the inside of the end, and use that on the 58 tool.  Using a sleeve made from an actual tool means its the right shape and hardness so there wont be galling.

Crude mockup...
