Glad I drive a Prius!
on: March 03, 2008, 05:21:58 PM
First I hear gas prices are going to hit $4 a gallon here in the States and then I read this. :ahhh

I'm glad my Prius gets 50+ miles per gallon. :D

I paid £1.06 a litre today.  :(  And my car only does 30mpg.

I have a Focus Station wagon, that's as small as I wanna get. Although it does get pretty good gas mileage. My wife's car is a Ford Taurus and it's OK too. It's pretty good sized but it's pretty safe too. With all the idiots in SUV's I feel better with my wife driving a bigger car.

*Please note: I'm not saying ALL people who drive SUV's are idiots. It's just idiots in big cars are more dangerous than idiots in small cars*

I'm certainly not saying anything bad about people who drive cars that get less gas mileage. There is something to be said for bigger is better! Being a defensive driver who actually drives the speed limit with a car that has 8 air bags in it somewhat offsets it's small size.

I actually didn't buy the Prius for it's gas mileage, I will never offset it's high purchace price with the savings in gas. I bought it because it is the cleanest running (least polluting) car on the road. Yes, I'm a tree hugger. :)

My main point is the higher gas prices go the better off I am compared to others. I commute about 70 miles every day, 6 to 7 days a week. Better than the 120 miles before I moved a year and a half ago!

I have for years realized that us living in the U.S. were getting off easy compared to most of the world as far as gas prices go.

I wasn't doggin ya. I don't see anything wrong with those cars. Maybe one of these days the automakers will actually make a car that is good sized and still gets great gas mileage and is good for the environment. I am convinced they already have the technology but they're waiting until the last possible moment to admit they have it. They gotta squeeze out as much money from us as possible.

I know you weren't doggin me. I thought you were making some great points.

I think you're right, they probably do have the technology already. Just imagine how far we would be if they had started working on battery development and other alternative energy sources back when we had the first big energy crisis back in the mid seventies. I can still remember sitting for over an hour in gas lines! >:(

I've heard quite a few alternative fuel sources have come along over the decades and the patents were promptly bought for large sums of money from the oil companies.  After they were promply bought, they were promptly locked away never to be seen again :-X

FYI, the first "clean" car was a steam car invented by an Italian in the middle of the 19th century. That's not a typo. The technology has always been there, and even better technology is already here. It just doesn't make money for the right people.

What created the steam?

When it comes down to it, the only free power sources are the the sun and running water/waves :D

I've heard similar stories and it wouldn't surprise me at all.  The oil companies would certainly have enough money to bribe someone to part with their idea.

The oil companies don't have anything to worry about. Whatever alternative energy sources are used would be taken over by the oil companies and they would make their money providing us that energy. We just need that energy to be renewable, less polluting and not depending on foreign sources (at least not the bad guys).
