What is your most used tool?
on: October 04, 2012, 03:09:47 PM
This is the question: which tool of your SAK(s) you use the most?
Mine is the Cadet file/ nail cleaner. By far. I use it for what was meant for but also as a Phillips screwdriver, a engraving tool, a pry tool, a blunt blade (for paper and adhesive tape) and other tasks. I use it even if I have better tools because the slim cadet is always at arm's reach or in my pocket. It is a pity the 91mm doesn't have one (the 91 file is less rigid and has a more rough cleaner and file). My Wenger has one though. Who would ever think it would be that modest tool.
Second is the scissors and afterwards the pen knife, pliers, screwdrivers etc.
What's yours?

Hmmm ....

Probably knife or scissors at the moment, but it does vary according to what's going off

Probably the cap lifter, followed by knife and scissors (not sure in what order).

Pliers/wire cutters.   By a goodly amount.  Knife would be a distant #2

Pliers is the most used tool on the Cybertool 34 I bought for her years ago. Both she and my daughter use it to fix and modify their jewelry. Much better than a Swisstool's or Leatherman's set of pliers for that task.

Scissors, knife, can opener, caplifter - roughly in that order.

Probably the flathead/bottle opener is tied with the large blade. I use the flathead/cap lifter on everything; as a scraper, light prying, opening bottles, etc.

Depends on the SAK. The Victorinox Camper is my most-used SAK, so I'll use it as the reference...

I use the saw most. Sawing wood, PVC, notching things, sparking a ferrocium rod, etc.
Then the tweezers. All of my SAKs have tweezers that I ground to a point.
The awl and corkscrew / mini screwdriver are next.
The bottle opener gets used as a screwdriver more than anything else.
I don't use either blade much at all since I carry other knives on me.
The can opener gets use as a Phillips screwdriver. I've only used it as a can opener three times.
The toothpick is for picking anything other than my teeth.
This is gonna hurt...

Preliminary conclusion: most tools (if not all) are of most importance to somebody.
Of course. That's the main reason SAKs are top sellers for over a century.
What about the scaler, hook, spatula and such?

Very rarely tried using the hook, but it doesn't bother me that it's there. Fish scaler on the other hand is something that would actually stop me buying a tool ... I'd intentionally go and buy something else instead. It is probably the sole reason I don't have a Swisschamp. I've never bought anything with a spatula either

Mostly the knife blades, followed by the screw drivers on the recruit, and the SD nailfile blade on the classic.

To me the SAK is a pocket knife first, with a few tools added on.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Yes -that is the most specific tool on the SAK and maybe the least useful to double up as anything else. I'm always put off it's inclusion.

Do any of our forum fishers use it?

Never used it for fishing but I used the divot tip for certain tasks. I used the ruler of course. And the whole tool to stir coffee and such (now I use the spatula). In fact, because it isn't sharp and you can open it very easily from the tip, it is the tool I use to play with, opening and closing it to enjoy the snap  They also say that the scaler is a children safe saw for carving Halloween pumpkins. Interesting, but we don't have Halloween here.
Yes, a general use tool could skip the scaler and it could be offered only with fishing, sailing and survival knifes. But it is a thin and lightweight tool, it doesn't consume much space and it wouldn't stop me from buying a SAK. I wouldn't want it on a 3-5 layer tool but on a 8-11 layer one it doesn't bother at all.

Funny thing is that I am currently looking for a, cheap, Victorinox angler for fishing...  :D

I like the fish scaler as a general purpose probe. It is thin, unsharpened and has notches that helps extracting small objects out from tight enclosures (Lego pieces lost behind a cupboard, for instance). All other relevant tools on a current SAK can quickly cause damage to plastic or paint when used as a probe. (OK, the spatula works, but that's not exactly mainstream on 91 mm knives...) For that reason I think the Angler is a very nice knife for tinkering.

Using the fish scaler to remove scales from fish has always made me think it would be a nightmare to clean up the knife afterwards.

i was thinking of this a thread like this with perhaps a poll if one could be added

and if people also wanted to mention the sak they most often carry as well as any other knives.

for example when i read of people having the blades high on the list i assume it's their only blade but that's just an assumption

while at work i carry a utility knife that uses disposable blades in a belt sheath so that naturally is what i'm using for blade functions.

my answer:

probably used the inline phillips on my yeoman the most or surprisingly the pliers on my deluxe tinker, followed by combo tool or can opener screwdriver followed by the tweezers.

while at work i carry the yeoman in coin pocket, the utility knife was mentioned and i have a LM skeletool clipped in my pocket, which frees me up from a pliers on sak.

i would and have used the blade on the skeletool before sak, one hand open and the serrations work on rough stuff, cut a piece of vinyl siding in half with it the other day to see if it could do it.

I am sure there were some similar threads before and some had a poll too...

Along the lines of what was the most usefull or useless tool on a multitool or SAK....

I had a quick search but could not find them..... I think NNR posted one with a poll a few months ago.
