My new 13 year old knife!
on: March 10, 2008, 08:17:48 PM
Thanks to Neil (NKB) in SOSAK, I will soon be getting a new KL95 DAK:

Needless to say I am pretty excited, although there is an interesting part to this:

It's not made by Victorinox!  It is also missing the keyring that is present on SwissMan's KL92:

and is also on my trusty old KL89:

Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about the whole thing.  I love the old and odd stuff, and this is another oddity, similar to the Fischer knife I have:

Unlike the Fischer knife though, the KL95 wasn't manufactured by Victorinox and Neil says that the quality isn't on par with the old Victorinox DAKs.

For those who are wondering, the KL designates it as a military knife (KL means something in Dutch, but I'd have to look it up) and the numbers are the year it was made.  My KL89 was made in 1989, SwissMan's KL92 was made in 1992 and this KL95 was made in- you guessed it, 1995!  Also, for those not familiar with the term, DAK is slang for Dutch Army Knife, the same way GAK is short for German Army Knife, SAK is short for Swiss Army Knife and OHT is short for One Handed Trekker.  SOSAK members are so used to flinging around these terms I sometimes forget not everyone speaks the lingo! :D

I love oddball SAKs, even when they are really DAKs in disguise!

Doing a search for Fosco lead me to a dutch site that sells multis, SAKs and other military/hunting/outdoors gear.  Since I don't understand Dutch I had to rely on Google's translation.  Interestingly enough, I did notice something else that said Fosco on it- this Fosco multitool:

Interesting, because it looks very much like a Bear Jaws tool from Bear Cutlery to me.  I'm going to try and contact Bear and see if they know anything about this.  It seems like a bit of a coincidence to me that this almost exact duplicate of a Victorinox knife comes from a company that also licenses tools from a company that Victorinox used to own...

Very nice!

My KL's are my workhorses, and serve duty in the garage and workshop.  All of mine are Vics, and all have the keyring.

The sheath says Fosco...but does the tool?  They might have just "repackaged" an existing multi design with their own sheath...sewing a logo on nylon is cheaper and faster than imprinting it in metal :D

Corrugated- you are absolutely right.  It is entirely possible that it is just the sheath that's been rebranded, but the point is that it's carrying their name anyway.  Unless "Fosco" is Dutch for "Tactical" or "Ninja" or "Mil Spec" or something.

I have a feeling a friend of mine, and fellow Canadian is going to really appreciate this one... it seems he's got a bit of a thing for DAKs! :D

Here's the SAKtivity he sent me last week and I posted today.

I think I'm safe- while he may be in the same country, he's still farther away from me than you are in the UK!

Yeah well, Canada's a BIG place!  It took me 3 or 4 days to drive from my parent's place to here when I moved out here... and my parents are still about a thousand kms from the middle of the country!

Sometimes being in a big country is a blessing and sometimes it sucks. It depends on how much you like the relative or friend who lives on the other side.
