AA Flashlight Recommendations?
on: December 10, 2013, 03:09:37 AM
Howdy!

My father-in-law has asked for a pocket sized flashlight for Christmas.

Here is what I think he would like best:

1) Something with a standard battery like a AA,
2) Tail clicky.
3) Simple UI, either single mode, or a very easy to use 2-3 mode UI.
4) Fairly inexpensive, hopefully less than $30USD (he tends to lose things).

So, what say you?  Any ideas? I was thinking of the Xeno E03, but am open to other ideas.  :salute:

Ha, I just came across that light.  I actually think that may be the ticket.  Slightly cheaper, and if he leaves the head tightened, it is effectively 1 mode.

Maglite has some models too, but none seem to be exactly what you need.

Also Jetbeam (BA20) and Romisen have some cheaper AA models with rear button and simple modes, or no modes.

I have not been impressed with the quality of Fenix (I have found them a bit fragile; their lower cost models) and had a problem with 1 romisen too, but I will still recommend them. Maglites are tougher (though they can get some oxidation which can affect current flow)

There are also several lesser known brands, with much lower cost too, but you may be taking a gamble, especially as it will be a present (I have in the review section some comments on some cheaper ones).

Klarus P1A, a simple 2 mode light like the Fenix E11. It is bigger than the E11, but has higher output.

If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

E11 v.2 was what sprang to my mind as well.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Fenix E11, Fenix E11, love it, love it, love it and they say it's been discontinued, so it may get harder and harder to find so go buy one  :ahhh :ahhh

Maglite

I'm sorry, but have to suspend your membership in the Man Club for that comment.  Recall please Man Club Rule #227, which provides that Mag-lites may only be used as hosts for high-end flashlight mods.  The re-instatement committee will convene in 36 hours to consider your infraction.

thanks -

Thanks for all your input everyone!  I decided to go with the E11.  So far I have had great luck with Fenix, and was able to get it on Amazon so I can get it fairly quickly too.
