Knives are not weapons, they are tools.  I think a knife is a horrible and messy thing to use for self-defense.

Sorry to say that those reasons in the first post are not from normal UK population.

The OP failed the qoute the text before the list of reasons on the website...

"Some people carry knives because their job involves cutting plastic etc, but I’m NOT talking about those kinds of people.  I’m asking why people as young as 13 years old are carrying knives?  And the people who do decide to use them against or on other people.

So here’s some reasons why people carry knives"........

Everything has to be read in context, I feel the first post of this thread is missleading.

On a side note, I carried a SAK at home from the time I was 6 years old, and at age 10 I was carrying an 8 inch fixed blade survival knife in the woods.  I wasn't allowed to take any knives to school but I did always carry pocket knives whenever I wasn't in school.

Times have changed...

I think using a knife carefully and properly is an essential life skill, and should be taught to kids as soon as they are old/mature enough to be trusted with it. Of course, taking them to school isn't a good plan at all ::)

I got my first pocket knife when I 'graduated' kindergarden and entered grade 1.  Small 2.5 inch dual blade.  Oh how I loved that thing and I wish I still had it.  I had a machete by the time I was in grade 4, used it to clear brush and make trails in the woods.  Never had any accidents as my dad was super strict about safety, how to hold and carry sharp tools etc.

And yes times have changed...  I did give my 8 yr old nephew a "my first vic" this holiday season with his Dads permission though.  Those ones with no saw are pretty safe in my opinion.

Nice, that's a good age to give a Vic to a kid.  My son  (age 4) will be getting a Tinker most likely, sometime around 7 or 8.  He already has a keen interest in my tools and knows that they can be dangerous if he isn't careful.  I let him handle some of my leatherman's under extremely close supervision.  He just likes the plier action.  He doesn't care about the knife yet.

A knife is an essential tool. Denying kids basic tools is telling them the world is a dangerous place, and they should rather interact with their iPad or engage in strictly directed activities under adult supervision. I feel a "proper" childhood should have place for independent exploration, some boredom and some scraped knees. (And for that matter, some cuts in the thumb.)

I agree. The last part especially. :salute: You learn by making mistakes, and trying to do better the next time. Personal experience is key. I've been around tools and knives for as long as I can remember. Playing around my grandfathers large carpenter workshop (cca 100m2) full of sharp chisels, saws, planes, ... Mostly unsupervised. And I'm still here, with all my fingers and toes. :D I learned to respect the tools by using them and sometimes getting bit by them too. ;)
