I modded my computer desk a bit
on: December 30, 2012, 02:56:32 PM
I had this desk for some time now and keep adding stuff and rearranging it to better suit my needs. The desk table  , the top part, you know what I mean) got very used up and didn't look to presentable so I decided to change it for a new one. I extended the back part to the wall and adjusted it to fit next to the old out of use chimney/wall. The masons that build the first floor of my house must have been quite a bit drunk cause none of the walls here are straight. I did manage to make it fit though.

On the left of the table there was one shelf and a big opening where the computer was supposed to be. I decided to add additional 3 shelfs instaid.

As the shelfs are quite long I didn't see what was deep inside so I added rails to them so they come out almost all the way.

On the right there was a drawer and a shelf. Same problem. Same solution. :D I keep old computer components, cables, chargers and external drives on the bottom one and the more often used stuff on the slide out shelf.

The drawer is sticking out a bit cause I repositioned the screws of the rails 15cm forward to allow the drawer to slide completely out.

The next project is going to be to change the decorative blue piece of wood above the drawer to another shallow drawer for knives, multitools and flashlights. I need to find some pluck foam for it though.

So how do your computer desks look like, have you done anything to them, adjust them, ...

Looking forward to pics. :salute:

That's a well thought out set up. Nothing quite like modding your space to get it working for you :tu:

Mine is currently unpicturable as it's a glorified storage shelf! ::)

When it was working as a desk/recording studio, it worked well. It's built under a double sized loft bed and had some similar storage to yours. Had a keyboard stand in an L-shape on the side, mic stand nearby and all kinds of amps and stuff on the side. Small mixing desk next to the PC keyboard etc.... damn, I miss it :(

What are the little tucked in draw things under the keyboard shelf on the right? Trinket hiding places? :D

Thanks. :salute: Mine was too but I needed to clear all the stuff off of it to knock the old top board/table off and place a new one on. We'll see how long it stays tidy. :D

Something like it. :D I found it years ago cheap and am sorry I didn't pick up more of them. :( Small storage space for various stuff with adjustable spacers.

Those little swing out storage trays are really neat I could use several our desk unit in the den.  They are really a great idea.

The whole desk makes me think mine is really a mess with stuff piled all over the top.  But my wife bought a rack to hold file folders that she wants to put in the middle between our 2 desks.  Our desks are U shaped units that have a lot of desk top area but are very short on storage drawers. The desks together make a upside-down W shape with a hutch unit on the outsides.  I will need to keep my eyes open for swing out storage units that I could add to the desk.

Thanks for the pictures you might have helped to solve a problem we have had for many years.

Bruce

My desk is getting old too, and I have no drawers or anything to organize.  I bought a plastic six drawer thing from office depot but it is just cluttered.  The problem is I am still living with the inlaws until either we move or they retire to their lake house, and I don't have space to organize.

I am going out of my mind living here.  Seriously.

And the final upgrade, for now at least. :D I modified the decorative blue board above the drawer to another shallow hidden drawer where I'll keep my most used/carried stuff. I need to find some pluck foam locally but the packaging stuff seems to be working for now.
