I did it! Key Mod - Leatherman Squirt PS4 (PS4+S4=PSS4?)

Well, I finally did it. I modded my Leatherman Squirt PS4.

The one on the left is not modded and probably won't change.
The one of the right is modded and since it was already beaten up quite a bit, I thought I'd give it a weathered look.
I'm reasonably happy with it.


Here are the three house keys, they fit really well too.
They snap into the opened position and also back into the closed position.
The key on the right is a little wide so it had to be done like that.


I chose scissors as I use them a lot more than I do pliers.
I carry an un-modified PS4 in my kit anyway if that need arises.


I originally didn't want a knife as I rarely need one but I figured the odds of my getting hassled about this one is pretty remote and they can be very handy at times.
It's in a really good spot too, I can use it like a scalpel with my index finger on the top or give it a bit of pressure by putting my thumb up there.


I've heard a lot of complaints about the tweezers but they seem to work for me. Then again, I only ever use them for what they were intended anyway. You can also see mzil's pin idea. That has proven to be very handy indeed. Link:http://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=23343

Umm, I didn't actually take any pics of the process... 
I could do some mock ones this weekend though. Just cut a random key and pull the old "bait and switch" in the assembly process if that'll do?

Kind of. I used the file bit as it's the biggest tool and marked where the scales/frame cover the bit. Then I lined up the key within that but made sure the stop on the key was 2mm out from the key stop so it would fit in the keyhole without the tool stopping it going in all the way. I clamped it together, it wasn't going anywhere. I drilled the hole and then cut off the excess on the outside leaving some metal to work with. It's a bit fiddly getting the action right so you'll need the excess. Then with a combination of a bench grinder and a Dremel with a few different bits, I worked the key down to match the bit. Un-clamped it, cleaned it up and tested it. In and test then out and file, over and over again until it was perfect. It takes time and don't rush it. You can take metal off but you can't put it back on.

I might do this with my house key, mail key and cigar locker key. The rest of my keys are car keys that are chipped, so I doubt those would fly like that. Thanks

Update:

I wasn't a huge fan of that tacky weathered look so I took it all off and smoothed it out. I used a rotary tool with a sanding barrel to take it all off and then a flap wheel for the finer sanding/brushing for the finished look.
I'm going to go over it again in a month or two in case it doesn't even out with wear.

Besides cutting them down to the right shape, not really. It's just a little fiddly.
The problem was that keys are generally a little thicker then the tools. A few mini washes here and there in the right combination fixed that right up.

Thanks It's been a lot of fun doing this and I'm very satisfied with the result so far. I'm going to put some fine sandpaper to it later tonight and see how smooth and consistent I can get it.

Check out "Leatherman Squirt" on Ebay. Just about all of the models that show up will have the right size screws and tubes. Just make sure it's second hand so you know the pic is of the actual one you're buying. If you get one in good condition, mod and use that one. If you want the finish too, only the tools need to be in good condition.
