Fantasy Multitool
on: January 06, 2013, 08:47:25 AM
Lets have some fun.

Lets dream up and describe our Fantasy Multitool. A few guidelines:
*The tools must be real tools. No outside opening Lightsabers or any of that nonsense.
*State the company that would manufacture the multitool. It doesn't necessarily need to be an MT company. Maybe Google made your multitool.
*REMEMBER TO PROVIDE IT WITH A COOL NAME.

I'll start.

My dream Multitool:

Start with a Leatherman Surge as a starting point, so clearly it'll be made by Leatherman
*switch the 420HC knife with a S30V Stainless Steel clip point knife from the Charge
*somehow add that sweet MUT hammer/cutting hook/carbiner/bottle opener to the bottom
*switch out that flathead screwdriver with that nice'n' chunky swisstool prybar
*add replaceable wire cutters
*replace the eyeglass screwdriver with SOG style wire strippers.
*Leatherman equivalent of SOG compound leverage (cmon, its a fantasy multitool).
*somewhere in all this, add tweezerman-quality tweezers.

...and it'll be called: the Leatherman Flood
to continue the naming convention (Wave, Surge, Flood)

Something like a 3/4 scale Leatherman PST.

Leatherman Juice scale plier head, standard Juice tools, but instead of the aluminum scales, and outside tools, have inside tools, with locks.

One side has blade, flathead, Wave-like bit holder
Other side has scissors, can/bottle opener, file (like the one on the Wave, but smaller)

Have the whole stinkin' thing done in something like Spyderco's H1 steel.

Called... PST3

Fantasy? OK, let's see.

Handles and frame are from the Surge, but made from milled titanium. Keep the etched ruler markings on the grips, perhaps even a bit more deeply-etched than on the Surge.

Plier head milled from CPM Rex 121 steel-- no need for replaceable cutters. Needle-nosed with lengthwise groove.

Plain edge blade is S110V, serrated blade with cutting hook is D2.

Bit driver and mini bit driver. Mini bit driver will be used as the attachment point for a selection of probes in both metal and plastic. Bit drivers will lock in both 90- and 180-degree positions.

Blade exchanger with wood saw, metal saw, diamond file, and remgrit-style blades, all with tangs of appropriate thickness. The "blade kit" will come with one set of blades sized for storage in place, and another set of longer, 6" blades that can store in the sheath.

Scissors the size of the current Surge ones but polished and hardened to Victorinox standards, with ultrafine serrations near the tips.

Sharpened awl with sewing eye.

Single heavy-duty flathead driver / prybar with integrated bottle opener.

*No* can opener.

110 punchdown tool.

"Maelstrom."

Start with a LM Surge as the basis (  I Like a couple of the earlier ideas, so will only suggest my additions/changes)

A whole lot of user-replaceable components that are readily available and don't cost an arm and a leg (sort of like SOG does but with a much wider range of options).  Designed so that users can buy different components to build the exact tool they want.

4 different plier heads:
A Needle nose (with long ways groove and replaceble cutters)
B Sub nose (with long ways groove and replaceble cutters)
C Needle nose (with wire strippers)
 D Shears

Built-in tweezers and toothpick

Bit drivers or fixed Phillips and straight drivers

All outside opening tools (easier to get at, makes plier handles better too).

Various optional blades (materials, profile and edges)

"Tsunami"  (it will sweep everything else aside)

I kind of assumed that being a fantasy design, it was implied to be unrealistic.

Nah, a realistic improved tool for me would be just a Surge with ST300 head, 2-position locking drivers, a set of well-fitted extended-length saws and file, and combining the can opener and flat driver into a thicker screwdriver/prybar/bottle opener like on the Spirit.

No outside opening Lightsabers
This is almost a deal breaker but I'll try to behave :D

On first thought,
Start with Vic Swisstool Spirit X
- OHO S30V main blade from Charge TTi
- Clip for tip-up-ready-to-open-with-your-thumb carry (like Leatherman Charge)
- Pliers head with removable wire cutters (from Leatherman S300 maybe but I'd prefer Spirit's pliers with added removable wire cutters)
- Tweezers, toothpick, pen and pin (like on Vic SAK plus scales)

I believe so. A great way to both improve the ergonomics of the tool and add a few extra capabilities without sacrificing any space for the other implements.

Sideclip with newer style pliers, modern Kick/Fuse/Blast Phillips (for the extender thing), and OHO plain edge S30V blade.

Scissors too maybe.

And here's it's ultra cool name: Sideclip v.2.

I could only imagine my fantasy multitool as having every tool I would ever want, packed into a size and weight I could carry every day.  If the Victorinox Champ could somehow incorporate all its tools into the size of a Tinker, I suppose I'd call it perfection.
