Jared Price Toucan now in production by Boker
on: October 29, 2012, 08:15:46 PM
Don't know if anyone's seen this one yet, but Boker has put Jared Price's "Toucan" one piece tool in to production under their Plus line.  440C steel, likely made in China.  Looks mightily interesting.

I couldn't help myself.  I had to order one. I've always liked that design.

Very cool to see smaller guys getting picked up by the big boys!

Way to go Jared and Boker!   :tu:

How is the kydex on this one? That's often lacking with mass produced gear.  For the price it looks really good!

Okay, selling the sheath separately is a kind of a dick move.

Got mine today.  Actually, I'm really impressed.  The Kydex sheath is great too.  Review to follow.

Okay, selling the sheath separately is a kind of a dick move.

If you are referring to the ShapeTool, it's a 3d printed product and the company that prints them can't sell two different materials in one package so they must be ordered separately. Also, it seems that you don't have to buy the sheath, if you are just going to use it as a scraper (it is printed unsharpened).

I've been carrying my Boker Toucan all weekend.  I've used it for cutting twine, opening bags of grain, bags of woodstove pellets and opening bottles.  :D

Let me give you the executive summary:

If you've been looking for a one piece bladed pocket tool, THIS IS IT.

The kydex sheath is perfect to use the prytip and bottle opener without risk of removing a finger.  It attaches snugly and requires a bit of practice to remove--I consider this a good thing.

Size wise, it's about the same size as an Atwood Prybaby:

The blade is a very nice flat grind.  I had expected chisel ground, but no, this is a very pleasant surprise.

The prytip/flat driver is a bit wider than the Prybaby, but just as effective.

And importantly, the bottle opener is easy to use:

At $38, you'll never find an Atwood with a blade (might have to add a 0 on the end...).  This is a very functional bladed one piece. :)

I think I may have to order one. They look cool and if Nate thinks they are good then they must be- there aren't too many folks with as much one piece experience and fewer still that use them to keep a farm running!

That does look pretty interesting.  I don't have much in the way of one piece tools, maybe this is a good start for a "proper" piece.

Obviously, this doesn't have the wrenches of some one pieces, but I carried this with my Atwood Prybaby and aside from nuts, I could do everything else with the Toucan just as well AND the blade is really very sharp with a useful shape.

I've just bought a Toucan as a Christmas present for my step brother.  After playing with it, sorry, inspecting it carefully, I'm impressed by the general quality of the Toucan and found it cuts a lot better than I expected.  However, I also found that there's more play than I expected when the tool's in its kydex sheath. Although there's no sense that the tool might come lose from the sheath, the fit is not as good as my Boker Gnome, which has no play whatsoever.  However, that's the only downside to the Toucan I've found and if there are any others, it's up to my brother to discover them.  BTW I'd very interested if Jared Price ever decides to license Boker to mass produce his friction folder design - I'd definitely look to pick up one of those at Boker Plus' prices.

Interesting...

My kydex sheath fits very well. I'd have thought there was a semi mechanized way to produce them...

The kydex sheath is easy enough to reshape if you want a snug fit. Heat it up till soft with heat gun, insert tool (with duct tape on sides for a little space, or without for reeeeaaaalllly snug), sandwich between two pieces of semi hard foam (sleeping/yoga pad, dollar store variety is fine), and clamp between two hard surfaces till cool (or just sit on it).

This is a terrific tool - I snagged it up as soon as it was avl, and have been pocket carrying it since (5th coin pocket). Very functional, pleasant sharp blade with a flat grind, excellent grip for cutting and compact size. These were the best $30 or so I spent!
