Juice Scissors... NOT impressed
on: January 18, 2013, 12:46:42 AM
I gave away my Juice S2 to someone who I thought would get a lot more use out of it, and recently got a Juice CS4 in a trade with SAKnight.

Both tools had scissors that I found underwhelming. I'm not sure if this is right across the model, or just two specific examples. In any case, I'm finding myself of the opinion that if scissors are high on your priority list, the Juice line might not be the best idea. A pity, really, since I LOVE the size of the tool, ergo, look, weight, form factor, and drivers.

If you don't feel like beating a dead horse, you could post a link to another thread where you've covered your thoughts.

I don't have everyone's opinions memorized just yet, but I seem to recall you're not exactly head cheerleader for the Leatherman fanclub. :D

I don't like them much either. Didn't open wide enough or feel like they grabbed things tightly enough when cutting. I think there's been quite a lot of mixed feelings on them in the past too.

I have a couple of KF4's which I love, because nearly everything else about the Juice tools work for me. It is a shame because I need scissors most days and prefer the SAK ones, in all sizes to the Juice ones.

I really do love LMs across the board but I would have to agree that they missed the boat on the scissor dept. They're ok for snipping strings but nothing else really IMO. I tried the S2 scissors on paracord but not very good. :td:

I too just got a Juice CS4, which I dont like the cork screw but just reading this thread decided to check out the scissors and I have to say, I didnt have any problems cutting paper or 550 paracord.

Not sure if I just got a good set or what but I didnt have any problems with mine.  Dont get me wrong, I would still think about trading it away for a S2 but just maybe I should hang onto it just for the scissors! :D

I too love the SAK scissors and use them alot, especially on my Rambler as I always have that with me.

I would be happy to cut a few other items that you all cut if I have it here and let you know good or bad...

I don't want to sound too harsh, but Nutnfancy's opinion is not a concern of mine. I have watched a lot of his reviews, seen him make a few good points, and I've also seen him say things that I know for dead fact are straight-up wrong.

Sir_mike... check out my scissor test thread, to see what I test all the scissors on.

50ft_trad... Long read, sorry for the delay. Ummm... yup. that about sums up my general feel for the tool line, except I don't have a problem with the drivers.

I come at them from the side. I got the cuticle bite ONCE, then just started using the side of my thumbnail to extract. Problem solved.

While the awl/saw extraction thing is annoying... the same as the can opener/scissor problem with the S2... at least a saw isn't an implement you're likely to need intermittently throughout a day on a daily basis. At least, that's my theory.

I'm not a fan of the aluminum scales on the series, but I find it MORE annoying on the Squirt line, where you're more likely to have them right against keys, and scratch the crap out of them even faster. C'mon, Leatherman... Carbon Fiber Scales!

Juice scissors are not the best that they should be. When the scissors feel like they are pushed down, they really have just a tad further to go. This requires more pressure on the cutting lever. As such these are are not as intuitive to use when compared to other scissors, but they do open to a full bite.

My Victorinox Scissors do not open to full bite. Have to raise up on the lever to achieve a full bit, but then that leaves the spring sticking up there.

Juice/Squirt/Style scissor spring is more superior and won't pop off or need replaced.

Surge scissors are by far the beefiest in cut ability. Massive leverage cutting lever, yet the bite is shorter in comparison to the rest of the BIG tools. One would of thought these would have been much longer, more bite. Haven't tried them out on sheet metal, but it may be possible.

Awl wise, they are down right sexy on the Juice. File the edges down with ceramic stones making all edges square-sharp. Not so sharp as to glance cut. They make for a great utility blade that way. I plan on making the Wenger Standard Edition's awl that sharp if they are not already.

Speaking of sharpening, Leatherman products are not overly sharp. In comparison to my only Victorinox knife to the dozen Leatherman tools, the SAK was sharper. I made them even sharper yet.

Perhaps your Juice's scissors should be sharpened. The Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker has a scissor sharpening mode by placing the stone out the end.
Have sharpened all of my Leatherman blades and scissors on the Spyderco TASM, and even the Victorinox blades now, as I want near-razor sharpness.

Corkscrew wise, though I have yet to use the one on my recent Climber, Juice rocks! Have a Yellow tail wine tool, both pop corks with ease. Both penetrate well. Juice and the Yellow Tail Wine Tool both have a fulcrum. Climber has no fulcrum.

I keep the  Juice XE-6 in my glove compartment along with a spare set of rosewood chopsticks, and a recently added CRKT Eat N' Tool.

I have a couple of climbers and thought they would be okay but not a fad of the corkscrew.  I just dont see me using it so I will put them up for trade.

I wasn't a fan of these scissors as well. I carry a mt at work because I cut a lot of zip ties, and the S2 did a horrible job at cutting. I was a fan of the juice over all, just not so much of scissors for any semi tough cutting task.

I love my Juice S2, but have to agree about the scissors.  I like the spring design better than the SAK's but the SAK scissors just "feel" better (smoother maybe?) when using them, and they work great.

Keep in mind that when you say 'SAK" here, you mean Victorinox. The Juice Scissors are VERY similar to the Wenger design. Same style backspring, but the leatherman has much longer blades, and much shorter handle, worse mechanical advantage.

Yes, sorry :-[  I do mean Victorinox.  I wasn't even thinking of Wenger as I don't have one with which to compare scissors.  While I like Vic's SAK scissors performance-wise, I don't like how the spring is so free to be easily bent.  It hasn't happened to me yet, but it does sometimes shift over to one side when I first open the scissors and then they close with the spring sticking out.  It doesn't seem to hurt anything and isn't any big deal, but just the point that it can happen is what I don't like.  Still, they perform better and just sound/feel more like scissors to me.  It's probably because of that spring ;) ::)

I'm right there with you on the spring issue with Vics.

I just got my first Wenger very recently, but am generally pleased with the scissors. They tested much better than the Juice's, even with the shorter blades.

Interesting.  I hope to someday have a Wenger (I have been eyeing the Evogrip 16 I think it's called), but they seem to be a bit pricier than Vic SAKs.  Plus I have higher priorities for what I want in my collection.  I want to get an original Wave (I'm going on a classics kick now that I have the PST II) and I'm looking to have Syph mate my Compact and Explorer to create a Yeoman and Climber :D

The one I just got was a Evo S17. I think the Evogrip 16 is a great knife. I think JerseyDevil said he EDCs one. I can see why. Good tool selection in a nice compact size.

Good luck on your Original Wave hunt. I think you'll like it when you get one.

I'm seeing a difference between the scissors on my Juice CS4, and my XE6.  The scissors work more smoothly on the CS4, than the Xe6, which seem to be a bit grindy. The EX6 had other issues; the file had a ragged edge that was catching on the sheath. I had to use a diamond file to smooth it off myself.  For the roughness in the scissors of the XE6, I'm not sure I want to start filing around the scissor blades.  I could send it back, but they might think I'm being too nit-picky.

Yes, it has a good selection for basic EDC needs, but it was around $40 on Amazon last I checked, which is a bit much for what you get in comparison to Vics.

Thanks :salute:  I would like a brand new one like the PST II was, but I know I'd have to pay a pretty penny for it.  So I may have to settle for used.  It's just hard to tell as you can never be completely sure what you're going to get in that condition.

That's interesting as I had the same issue between my S2 and XE6, only the XE6's scissors are a little smoother.  I guess it's just a matter of QC in many cases.

The scissors on the Juice was one of the reasons I stopped carrying it as my EDC.  There was more than once where I felt underwhelmed by the way they performed.  I found that may Vic Deluxe Tinker scissors seemed to cut through most of what the juice couldnt.

That being said, I still do like the form of the tool and the function of a lot of the tools on it.  I even used the corkscrew to hold a SAK eyeglasses screw.

How amazing! Just tossed the Vic screw in the XE6's corkscrew and it fits & holds in better.
Looks like I may have to get another one of them gizmos some day for the Juice.  :tu:

Someone made a mod that was the small bit from the wave/charge, with eyeglass size flathead on one side, and phillips on the other, and created the handle for it to screw it into a corkscrew. I think that was Bushido? Can't remember now, and I have no way I can think of to search for it.
