Cable cutter head mod - possible or not
on: January 25, 2013, 05:35:00 PM
Having just read a post elsewhere on the forum regarding cable cutter heads on MT's - I've suddenly realised that it no longer exists. Both Gerbers the Evolution and MP600 that came with the cable cutter head are no longer available.

How difficult would it be to simply take the head off a cable cutter and fit it onto say a tti or surge?

Has anyone attempted this in the past?

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Bob did it! I remember seeing a post where he welded blobs of metal onto the cutter heads and then formed it into a MT shape.

Bob once made his own PowerCut (a prototype made by SOG) but no one has ever done it since. It wasn't even easy, he took a pair of side cutters, built up a blob of metal with a welder and then milled and fit them into a SOG compound leverage handle.

I think the amount of torque and damage that COULD result in cutting hard wires would bring any MT with folded metal handles to their knees, possible a warranty issue.

That being said, I would KILL for a set of side cutters on a MT.

Why stop now?

But surely that wouldn't be very strong.
I wondered if you could just chop off the head off normal cable cutters and then alter them until they fitted into an MT.

I'm guessing you would have to remove afair bit of the back of the cutters in order for the tool to fold correctly.

UPDATE

I've just seen the picture you've posted - my mistake, I thought you meant Bob had filled in the jaws themselves on regular pliers, then milled them down into the shape of a cutter head. My mistake - sorry! :salute:

Well, the issue of warranty is void on any mod - so that's just a cheap get out  :D

That's not entirely true. Some side cutters are shorter and skinnier than LM plier heads. I was more referring to a production model getting damage. I know I abuse side cutters all the time. :)

Ive always kept my eye out for side cutters with fat handles I could do this mod with without having to weld, but no luck.

I don´t know if this is helpful at all, but i can add a bit of information.

The Gerber cutter head shows up sometimes on the german bay, it´s the MP 650 variant.

It´s an altered MP 600 head, they seem to come from teh same die/cast and the nubs holding th "chain link clips" to fasten the head to teh MP 600 are ground/milled off.

Maybe someone wants to try out a mod with one of those?

The head looks like this (ok, nearly, as this is not the shear/cable cutter head...)

If you have a set of normal diagonal cutters, could you mill them to fit?
edit: and then i read the thread Syph007 posted

I keep my eye out while walking through the tool section of various stores, hardware stores, Home Depot, etc but I've never seen a set of side cutters with handles wide enough to simply cut off and add pivot holes to. :-\
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

The Gerber cable cutter head is designed for cutting copper wire not hard or thick wire , it is easily notched  ::) ::)
