New CRKT KERT designed by Ray Kirk!
on: February 01, 2013, 07:41:08 PM
I've been excited about this one for some time now and as I mentioned in the General Forum, it's finally here!

Usually I like to babble on and tell some story or history about a tool to break up the photos and make it all seem that much more interesting, but I just can't contain myself this time, so here goes everything at once!

Here it is with one of Ray's original hand cut versions (top) and a waterjet Damascus MTO version showing the three different production levels!

And a couple more shots because I can...

Awesome!  I can't wait to put this one to use!

I think the little hat was a lawyer thing- CRKT's legal team probably didn't want someone finding a way to accidentally cut themselves with the blade and sue!  :D

It's a great story this one!

I have a couple of Atwood's, but the tool I use 99% of the time for this kind of stuff is the Raker (I have a Damascus and BO version left). I dread to think how many packages they've opened since I got them and the cutting edges are still top notch on both.

It's lovely to know the history behind them :)

I used to come here a lot.

Well, I'm sitting on a lifetime supply of Atwood tools for keychain carry. But this one sure is tempting...

Can anyone comment on the steel and the edge holding capabilities? Will it hold up between keys?

Is this thing safe to carry on a keychain in a pants pocket or will it cut the pocket or even me? Not really interested in getting circumcised by a keychain tool, you know.

I can't  comment yet on the longevity of the KERT but I have been carrying an original Ring Tool on my work ID for a couple of years now and its as solid and sharp as the day Ray sent it to me.  I have ruined two Leathermans at work and yet the Ring Tool lives on.

Splurge- spend the $9 on one and if you don't like it, I'll take it off your hands.

Oh, and the CRKT version has the little rubber doodad to keep you from circumsizing yourself, although I haven't had that problem with the original... yet.

I swapped out the standard MTO version on my work lanyard with the CRKT version and it's already seen some use slicing open a 40kg bag of rock salt.  It worked beautifully.

I've had a few issues before with the MTO one as it would occasionally hang up on my seatbelt when I went to get out of the Jeep.  I was always concerned that it might slice up my seatbelt before I needed it to slice up my seatbelt.  The little rubber hat seems to make a difference, but I won't know for certain until I've carried it around a bit more.

Are there any plans for the maintenance chores for the KERT? A proposed method of sharpening the cutting part? A video howto maybe? Or will it be covered under warranty or something?

I doubt it will be covered under warranty.  I know Ray offers to sharpen the originals free of charge but I doubt he or CRKT would be willing to do it for production versions.

I just use a round sharpener on mine though, as the cost of shipping it to and from Ray is enough to cover a while new one.

Also, an update- I was using mine this morning to break down some boxes for recycling and somewhere along the line I lost the rubber hat.  I wouldn't suggest anyone who wants to use a KERT get too attached to  the hat.  I have no idea where it went, and I figure it's no great loss.

That's what I think of it too.

I've tried taking a LM pocket diamond sharpener (the only sharpener slim enough to fit in there) to my damascus MT.o RRT, but the results were not that good. I plan to have the RRT meet my Dremel, if/when I manage to unearth it from the boxed chaos that was my last move. However, not everyone has a Dremel, and with KERTs being the commercial hit we expect them to be, I'd guess some maintenance instructions/video would go a long way towards relieving Ray and CRKT of disgruntled customers. Just my opinion though...

Excellent point.  If Ray doesn't chime in soon I'll send him a message and get his thoughts.

The Diamond file off of the Spyderench works a treat for sharpening the RRRt - just thought I'd chuck that in!

That's true. :tu: I also expect Paul/Zed to chime in saying that a length of paracord/string with some stroping compound also does the job. My point was that I'd prefer the designer/manufacturer to come out with a somewhat "proposed/approved" method, instead of us reporting what worked for us.

On sharpening the key ring tool.  I used to use a diamond tapered round file that was made to sharpen serrated edges.  It worked alright but was slow.  I used a dremal tool with felt bob and polishing compound to put the final polished edge on.
I now use a 3/16" diamond chain saw sharpener for the dremal and it works great.  Still use the polishing compound to hone it when done.  The chain saw sharpener lays almost perfectly in the groove and makes the edge more uniform.  The angle you use will depend on what you cut a lot with it.
When I tested the proto type last summer, all I needed to do was use the felt bob and polishing compound and it brougth it back to paper slitting sharp.  I have some extra if some one needs to purchase on.  I never put them on the web site because I didn't know if they would be needed.

I forgot to mention that you can use a drill motor instead of a dremal.  A  dremal is just faster.

I hope it wasn't quick drawing and a hang up.
With all the keys on my ring, they may act as a protector to keep it from cutting my pocket. I don't know for sure.  Just never cut it.  I may have developed a mental guard against drawing too fast and cutting by mistake.

No, I had it on my keyring hanging off the backpack strap. The cutter got caught on the strap and when I picked the bag up the strap got cut. $250 Camelbak backpack  I started a thread but I can't link to it from my iPhone but its in this sub forum called "you won't believe what I did" or something like that. I was looking into replacing that pack anyway with the Oakley Kitchen Sink. I would still like to get the strap fixed until I get a new pack though. Great tool, it did what it is designed to do :tu:
