I think they're still being made, or at least sold now and then by Swissbianco.

Not cheap however.  :(

Oh really?  Can you direct me to that, or provide a link please?  I'd like to check that out just to further torture myself ::)

It sounds like my fantasy SAK is the now discontinued Yeoman.  I like the Compact and the Explorer, and the Yeoman is basically a combo of them.  I really wish I was into SAKs when that was available

Ya mean this knife?

(Image removed from quote.)

http://www.1877knifeshop.com/swiss_army/boyscout/55781.htm

or

http://www.armorysupply.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=18873&gclid=CLX5xeT-4LQCFYp_QgoduSsAcw

That's an Explorer.  The Yeoman doesn't have the opener layer or the small blade, replacing it with the combo tool.  The Yeoman is one knife I'd love to have.  Maybe I'll have someone build one....

Yeah it is an Explorer, and I don't know why it's called Yeoman there, but I saw that as well recently.  I really want one, but I doubt I could afford one, whether I was to buy from a collector, or have someone build one.  Unfortunately I expect either option to be pricey, and I know the wife would not be too happy with me spending a considerable amount for "another" SAK, especially if it's quite similar to one I already have.  She doesn't understand ::)

Both websites I linked to called it the Yeoman...  Sorry it wasn't the one you were looking for.

If you can't fix it with duct tape, a hammer, a screwdriver, bailing wire, zipties, or a Swiss Army Knife, it's broken and irreparable.

And for what it's worth, the boy scout version of the Explorer was also called a Yeoman for some reason..

I had an old Explorer that I got in a trade with Lynn, and a Compact, tore them both apart, and made my own Yeoman.

I have an Explorer, a SwissBianco Yeoman, a Compact, a SuperTinker, etc.

I spent a pretty penny on the SwissBianco Yeoman, and it is nice. But, still not as perfect as I'd imagined:

  • The flat head screwdriver on the combo tool is smaller than the large flat head on the bottle openers of other models. So, not really big enough for a full size slotted screw.
  • Not only that, ^ but it moves the center of the screwdriver forward on the tool, so it tends to close up on me in use
  • The can opener (which I admit I rarely use) is a last-ditch tool only now. It takes a lot more effort and time to open a can with the combo tool
  • We lose the small flat head screwdriver on the can opener
  • The tip of the combo tool is kind of sharp. I used it one time to open a really tight twist-off beer bottle cap and made a mess of the job. It got done eventually, but it would have been easier to just wrap my shirt around the cap and twist it off. The tip actually punched into the bottle cap.
  • No more "spare blade." I used to hold the small blade back as a razor sharp one, spare, etc. No option for that if there's only one blade. You gotta keep it clean and sharp all the time. No more small blade for precision work either.
So the Yeoman is the ultimate 3-layer compromise SAK. But it is even more of a compromise than usual. In practice, I find that I still prefer either the Super Tinker, (if 3 layers is a must, such as with dressier pants) Explorer, (for those times that I don't mind a 4th layer, like with a pocket hanger) or a Rambler. (and REALLY go minimalist.  Don't laugh, the phillips on that tiny combo tool is surprisingly good, all-around.)

Plus, since the darn thing cost over $100, I find myself treating it more like a rare thing than a semi-disposable $25 SAK. ;)  It rarely gets used.

I like this idea :tu:  Similar to the hook's nailfile on the Compact, only it would be longer.  Good idea :salute:

All good points.  I tend to also carry a full size multitool as well, so the screwdriver issues aren't as big of a factor for me.  However, in the summer, outside of work (I still have to dress fully as I work at a bank) I would be in light shorts and a SAK would be perfect for that.  The other option is the Juice S2, but even that can be somewhat heavy, but it is very pocket friendly and has pliers.

The Yeoman sounds just about perfect for what I want in a SAK.  I love my Compact, but I also enjoy the magnifying glass.  I don't necessarily have to have the phillips though, but if that was all I was carrying, then it would be good to have.  I don't know if there is anything else that could go in place of the phillips on that layer though.

You could probably put both openers next to each other on the same layer. Seen it done a few times on alox models by Syph, pretty neat. :)

It was with the philips instead of the mag glass though but I'd imagine it'd work both ways?

Oh really?  That wouldn't be bad at all.  That would cover the phillips with the can opener, plus have the added benefit of both dedicated openers available.  So would the combo opener just be replaced with a small blade as is common with the main blade?

The other option I thought of to replace the phillips would be an awl, but it would possibly have to be a bit beefier than the normal one on the back of SAKs in order to fit that layer.  The only problem there is then there is no phillips.  Typically that isn't an issue for me, but like I mentioned about the summer, I would probably only be carrying the Yeoman and a phillips would be nice to have in that case.  As I said, the Juice S2 is the other option to cover all the basics there, but no mag glass, which I have fun with :D

Here's one of the models he used that technique for. :)

And yeah, I suppose you could have a regular knife layer with the big and small blades and then the mag glass/opener layer. Pretty neat package overall.

Not sure about the length of the mag glass compared to the philips though, if it'd fit with the openers on the other end.

That was pretty cool to see in stages like that, thanks :salute:  It's interesting how many ways SAKs can be modded.  I bet it's a fun hobby.

Ok.  So, I know it's Wenger, but...

Wenger Swiss Army Pocket Mountain Bike Tool

I'd love to see Victorinox produce a version of this knife with a Wood Saw (and a few extra back tools) included.
If you can't fix it with duct tape, a hammer, a screwdriver, bailing wire, zipties, or a Swiss Army Knife, it's broken and irreparable.

A Wenger is still just as much a SAK as a Victorinox!

After much thought, I've come to think that the perfect do-everything EDC SAK for me would be a Compact CT34; a CT34 with the openers layer removed and a combo tool in place of the small blade.

you should be able to do it with a mag glass instead of the phillips driver.
