Just awesome.... tiny tool win

As Nigel Powers said to Austin about his Spy-Car being a Mini.... " It's not the size mate, it's how you use it."

Ive never been a big fan of the 58s, but it really does seem appealing to build a big little one... :D  I dont think I want to know what I'd have to spend to track down all the parts though... But its still cool!

I don't think this thread is complete without mention of Neil's little monster. >:D

Now for something a little bit silly ....
(Image removed from quote.)
.... May I present the Mini Max

Comprised of all currently used 58mm tools it a bit of a fat little chap.  Its girth has been extenuated by the inclusion of the chunky scale options, whistle on the back and LED on the front.

(Image removed from quote.)  (Image removed from quote.)

Its construction has been delayed for a little while as I was without a flat head bottle opener and also the correct diameter brass.  Thanks to Ninjaz for donating the missing tool to the cause  :tu:

All tools are accessible but the chip fork divot repair tool would be a little tricky if you bite your nails.  Whilst this SAK is pretty much an exercise in excess it does make you wonder why there's no factory made Rambler with USB module   Perhaps they figure everyone pops the drive into the USB socket without taking it out the SAK (realistic) and they don't want to have too much weight dangling.

Here's some clickables...

Nice.. I've never even seen anything with the whistle scale on it for sale.
But then again, I am a sufferer of "Male Pattern Blindness" as my better half puts it.  :dwts:

I see some redundancy. I guess there aren't enough unique tools, right?

I do not see two identical tools there ;)

Identical?  Maybe not, but I do see a pair of scissors...
If you can't fix it with duct tape, a hammer, a screwdriver, bailing wire, zipties, or a Swiss Army Knife, it's broken and irreparable.

I think the minimum you'll need is an original Mini Champ, a Midnight Manager, a couple of Rovers (old and new flat blade combo), Flash drive and the one I found hardest to get, a Caddy.

The fiddliest part of the 58 is the backsprings love to pop out of alignment.  I've found that I have to lightly clamp the tool together while peening the pins or else... :ahhh

Ya these things are tiny!  I just took apart a rambler for practice, and trying to save the bushings was a challenge.  Its nice the pins are 1/16 as that size of brass is available in all the hobby shops locally.

I've found that SAK pliers are perfect for setting the little 58mm springs, particularly when it's a two spring tool; they're fine enough to let you easily grab one spring without grabbing on the others. An assembly board is helpful too.

As drilling out the bushings goes, I'm batting about .500 for them in terms of saving versus fouling them up. That might be one of those cases where one could make a case for simply clipping them off on one side. Now, drilling out the alox variety on the other hand, that's a trip.

The way the spring system is designed on the 58mm, once you understand it, is IMHO a stroke of genius.

It is an impressive design I totally agree.  I want to upscale those spring shapes to 84mm and have a dual top layer 84mm SAK.

Using SAK pliers to help take another one apart has got to be cannibalism, right?  :o

Not so, I use the pliers to help put it back together. Make it better, faster, stronger...or at least, not something that belongs in the bin  :P

I have done one executive mod. Re-scale in horn with brass bolsters and bail. There aren't many extra tools in the 74mm range. If you get an old one they have the same size pins as the 58mm, the newer ones are 2mm I think. I'm thinking of trying to fit a 58 combo tool to the next exec because there is no bottle opener in 74 size.

Ya there sure arent as many tools on 74s.  A monster 74 wouldn't be very big.

You could use the tools from the 65mm Wenger PCT?

Edit: the executive does have 3 types of orange peelers, nailfiles and scissors..  :D

Yes that would be a belter. It has been done before, I believe by Spork.

Or you could grind an opener in a second orange peeler - a bottle peeler  :P
