Cleaning grease off new black oxide leatherman?
on: February 27, 2013, 12:16:14 AM
My black oxide Rebar arrived today in the mail today and my hands are covered in grease / grime after messing with it.  Is there a good way to clean all this gunk off?

Hot soapy water and a tooth brush. Rinse in hot water. Let dry. Oil the pivot points.

Is that pretty standard for most Leathermans?  Only other Leatherman I have is the Micra which was fine out of the box.

Also, do I need to take the tool apart to oil the pivots?  What sort of oil do you recommend?  I typically use lithium grease to lube my folding knives.

Edit after re-reading the post:  It sounds like it just needs to be wiped down with a clean dry cloth.  My generally tool cleaning recommendations are below:

WD40 is actually good as a grease remover and cleaner.  If the tool isn't too dirty I will spray the tool down with WD40 and then wipe it thoroughly until it's as dry as possible.  I then use my air compressor at 120 PSI and blow out all the remaining WD40 so it doesn't collect dust and grime.

If it's really dirty I wash the whole tool with hot, soapy water and a long nylon brush, then dry the tool. I then drench with WD40 to displace the water and use the air compressor to blow all the excess WD40 off.

It always works well for me.

Hey VR4, it sounds to me like what you have on your hands is not grease and grime, but the black oxide coating.  This is a very common if not universal experience with BO Leathermans.

Take a paper towel or two and rub every surface pretty vigorously.  That will remove that loose (my terminology), papery outer layer of the BO, and after that it will not get your hands dirty.

Rub a paper towel on it, and look at the paper towel. You'll see what I mean.

Peace out.

I put a bit of mineral oil on a clean cotton rag and wipe a new BO tool down. Wipe it down enough to remove most visible oil. For new BO you'll also get some black stuff coming off on the rag.

I used brake cleaner on mine, then spritzed it with the ole' WD-40.

Brake cleaner is handy stuff to have around. Great for cleaning any type of metal when you don't want to leave residue. Plus, it's cheap and easy to find (any auto parts store or big box store that has an automotive section).
