Alox Mod with 111mm Combo Tool
on: February 23, 2013, 11:48:44 AM
This is my first post, been a long time lurker but finally joined up and have started to build up my collection. I am mostly interested in SAK's but do have a small interest in Leatherman, too.

I have just purchased an alox electrician to use as a base from which to mod. I haven't received it yet as it is being shipped from the US to the UK.

I have been in touch with syph007 who is happy to mod the SAK for me and I just wanted some advice from more experienced users about my design. I'm intending to replace the electrician blade for an awl and the bottle opener for a combo tool.

The question I have is this: What combo tool is best for an SAK alox to sit in the same layer as an awl, the 84/91mm or the 111mm?

The 84/91mm is quite thin and would be from a Waiter. The 111mm is a little more robust and would be from a Hunter. Would there be any issues fitting a 111mm into an alox?

Any advice to help me decide which tool would be better?

Thanks  :D

Welcome.

As for the combo tools, you're mixing up the sizes. The 111mm and 91mm are the same size. The 84mm is smaller. For an ALOX mod you'd need the 91mm one like from the Compact.

Thanks for the welcome  :drink:

enki_ck: Are the sizes wrong? I have never seen either combo tools in person and was going from what the SAKwiki said:

I'll have a look at the price of a Compact. Thanks for pointing that out.  :)

I've been discussing options with syph007 and was hoping to make my perfect EDC (if possible) with the tools I use the most. Nothing fancy. 3 layers on an alox is about the right weight/size for me.

The biggest issue for me was what size combo tool would work best.
