I carry my new Raker tool on my key ring until I get a lanyard made to put it on my gear shifter. I hang the key ring on the strap of my backpack. I was unloading the car from a trip we just took and I went to grab my pack out of the back seat and the Raker tool caught the strap and when the tension got on the tool it sliced my strap  Any ideas on how to fix my strap??? I'm not willing to part with a $200+ backpack that easily. I just feel really dumb right now.

Sounds like a easy job with sewing machine, if you don't have one find some sort of shoe/clothing repair shop and they can do it in a minute.

Yeah, we have plenty of sewing places here living near a military base. I'll take it to my cleaners tomorrow and see what they can do to help.

Oh yes!  ALL of this.   :D :D :D

As to repair, Take it to a shoe repair or someone who has a heavy dutty sewing machine.  If it's in a location where it won't rub on you, overlap it as much as you can and then do a box with X oversew.  It's done for climbing gear, BUT in the case of climbing gear, the thread type and stitch count are critical to safe repair.

If it's in a spot that will rub on you, you'll have to be more creative as to how to patch it.

Depending where the damage is, you could get an extra piece of strapping spliced in to reinforce the join but make a feature of it with a loop for a S-biner to attach lanyards to, or a pocket to hold a AA or AAA flashlight.

Many years ago I had a pair of leather motorcycle pants made that were about three inches too short once I was seated on the bike. (They were made using a pair of my Levis as a pattern and the length was good standing up..)
Rather than sew a 3 inch strip on the bottom, we cut the legs at mid thigh and inserted the extra length there.
This made it look like a deliberate feature rather than a patch repair.

...just a thought.

lol, that is kinda funny, but really sucks, Sorry! Like everyone said see if you can get it stitched up, depending on where on the strap is cut it shouldn't be a prob. That's one reason why I got my bag, the straps are interchangeable, you can release the strap at both the top and bottom and put new ones on, Just in case they get worn out or some putts cut them by accident, lol, sorry just had to say it, lol!! JR

I like the idea of making the strap detachable. I'll go to the seamstress on Monday and ask her what she can do for me.

My apologies for not updating this. I took the pack to my dry cleaner (mostly all cleaners here have seamstress' in them) and the little Korean lady fixed it right up for me with me standing there.
