some light oil and a toothpick to get it in the right spot now and then means you don't have to worry.

The main blade tang stamp, old style gray frame mag glass and old style shorter Philips tell that it is pre 2005 so yes, it also got the non SS saw - you can also tell that from the saw thickness and the side files. But there is also the grooved corkscrew that indicates that it is older than that.

The SAK arrived today and I have to say the seller must have stronger fingernails than me because I couldn't open a single tool without resorting to pliers and I didn't want to do that.

Gave it a half hour soak in WD-40 while I got changed out of my work clothes and had a coffee and then went straight in with the sidecutters and nipped the bushings and ends of the pins off the corkscrew side.
Took quite a bit of force to punch the pins out but once out they are hardly worn at all, good enough to salvage for a thinner knife build later.
Once the pins were out it collapsed into a pile of very sorry looking parts.

Started cleaning them up but had to stop and cook dinner.

The liners are pretty much cactus.. the outer sides are not bad, but all the inter-layer liners are badly corroded. a couple even showing intergranular corrosion rather than just on the surface.  Intergranular corrosion is where the material corrodes from the inside as well and it flakes up in layers like wet plywood.

The parts I have cleaned up so far are coming up nicely. As I suspected, most of the mess is staining from the rusting file and it scrubs off without there being any marks on the tool itself.
The main blade has the broken tip so I will replace that, but even the rust staining on it cleans off ok.

More progress pictures tomorrow.

I dunno... was it worth $4? :D  I guess if the tools can be saved though you can breath new life into a neglected SAK.

Think they need sterilized too, might catch a disease from them nasty looking things. And don't cut yourself. You might need more than a tetanus shot.  :dwts:

Now a perfectly functional user with a donor "thick tang" main blade from an old Spartan and assorted liners and scales from the parts box. The file cleaned up halfway reasonable after a session with a stainless wire brush. Both sides and the saw edge are still sharp(ish) and if I could find my Phosphoric acid I would give it a dip to kill any remaining rust.

I don't think it warrants any more time or money spent on it but I could probably throw it on eBay locally and get double what the parts and original knife have cost me...  and it was fun.

A perfect example of a self funding hobby.

How many man hours did you put into its restoration, from tearing it down to final assembly?
