on: April 06, 2008, 12:27:14 AM
I am looking to get a Leatherman for bushcrafting the diamond file appeals for sharpening my hatchet and the saw blades are quite good too.My firts thought was the Surge but all opinions are welcome

probably either the Wave or Surge :multi:
"Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall;
 Some run from breaks of ice, and answer none:
 And some condemned for a fault alone." -William Shakespeare, King Lear (1608), Act IV, scene 6, line 169

If you want sharpen a lot of tools I'd go with the Surge since you can replace the file. On the other hand, the Charge or TTi has better steel for the knife blade and is lighter. Depends on which one is more important to you.

The Charge fits my hand better than the big Surge. Also the file and the saw on the Charge are the same length as those on the Surge, so the Surge's heavier weight doesn't really mean it can do bigger bushcraft chores.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Are you limiting yourself to a Leatherman solely because of its diamond file?  Or is there another reason?

I would aim for the SURGE. The reason I say this is because it has an awl, replacable saw/file, big scissors, and you can use large T-Shank blades to saw down some thick wood! You can also use the diamond file to sharpen the blade and any other cutting tools for that matter..

the leatherman saw cuts better than any other multitool saw I have used except for the swisstool. very good saws I think.

To be honest between LM and Vic I don't see the difference in how the saws cut! I like LM saws because the teeth go all the way to the tip... Unlike the Swisstool/SAK... The Vic files are don't go to the tip either..  :(

I had thought of the leatherman because of the file my Swiss tool is a terrific alrounder but I had thought the Leatherman might do a better job for camping /bushcrafting

It's what I'm here for :D

Although I do feel a little bad for talking you out of buying another tool :-[

But instead of buying two mate, you could just get a DMT diafold instead, that way you've got two grit options ;)
