How many layers is the s557 ?........  5 ?

Yes, 5 layers. Have a temporary short leash on mine with a clip. Have been carrying the S557 in the watch pocket of my Carhartt jeans quite comfortably.

Decided to give one of my S557 a more classic approach.
To be honest and in my opinion, classic wins here

Yes, definately slimmer

Where can you source Wenger scales?  ???

Here is a place
http://www.swiss-knife.com/en/handles-sides/wenger-handles/85-mm-3-1-4.htm

You will see, however, that it is much easier (and probably cheaper) to just buy a knife and use it as a donor.
The only classic scales that will fit the Evo are the later ones with the "Wenger" name embossed.

In for three

Some dodgy geezer stepped out of he shadows offering me some special candies....

Is it unique to have a 557 rather than a S557?

Did you notice that apart from the non-locking blade, the tools position is also different?
The scissors are next to the main blade and the pliers are between the scissors and universal wrench.
Humm, I think this "variant" need more researching.... seems more a custom order to me.

To be honest, until you mentioned it,I hadnt  knew the Philips was way easier to get to than usual.

I changed the scales after taking the pics last night, and there's no evidence of it being a mod job,so curiouser and curiouser!
