Snap with 1/8" pivots
on: March 19, 2013, 11:46:10 AM
Hello everyone

This sunday, I tried to assemble a cadet with scissors with the 1/8" pivots.

It worked and it looks right but has no snap at all.

- It does not depend on how hard I tighten the screws
- I applied massive amounts of oil
- I filed the drilled holes with a dremel diamond file-bit
- I removed the burr on the drilled out holes with 800-grit sandpaper

I really don't know what to do. Do you have any tipps for me or could describe your approach in detail to me, please?

Cheers

Make sure that the pivots extend into the scales on all 6 positions! This is crucial to tight snap.

Ok. Can I drill completely through the scales on the cadet and sink from outside for the screwheads?

If your pivots are 1/8'', then drill a 1/8'' hole. Countersink from the outside only and not too deep, Cadet scales are very thin. Make sure the edge of the pivot hole on the inside is sharp to elimiate any play.

But the most important thing is to have the pivots ground long enough so they stink inside the scales. The scales are the things that define the position of the pivots and therefore the overall tension. The more layers your mod has, the harder it is (and should be) to snap the final scale on.

Ok, thanks for your help. I'll probably have to buy a new cadet, because I smurfed the scales up already...

Cheers

Ya getting cadets built with pivots is much harder than the larger pioneer size.  Very tight tolerances if you want to countersink the screws.  If you want an easier time use button heads and it will be much easier to get the thing built right as you can have more pivot in the scale, but then of course the screws protrude somewhat.
