Sling shot's.
on: April 10, 2008, 10:29:31 PM
Ok as many of you know, I had planned to start up doing field archery again, but due to a distinct lack of money, and the goverment health and safety department making it mandatory to do a £200 training course (which I don't need ::)) before they let me loose with a Bow, I've decided to go back to basic's and relearn the art of slinging :)

My question is has anyone had any success with making a sling out of paracord ???, the one's I've made in the past were considerbly less accurate that one's I made out of twine/sissle string, I'm pretty sure it's got a lot to do with the elasticity of paracord, placing too many variables on the projectile, as oposed to the regular string types that have no give at all :-\

So are there any grades of paracord out there with a lot less 'give' in them ??? , I really want to get back into the slinging game as soon as possible, so I'd be grateful for all the tips and links you guy's have to offer :)

Here's the best one I've found so far...

It's not paracord but accessory cord that you can buy in climbing shops is very non-elastic (static in other words!) I have some 4mm (i think) in a nice shade of yellow (read nice and bright!) if you want to try some give us a shout and i should be able to sort you out a couple of meters.

Not sure about paracord that doesn't stretch though, i'll let other people chime in about that :)

Wouldn't have offered if i minded :) It's pretty flexible, it's designed for attaching to nuts and cams whilst climbing. Not quite as flexible as paracord as the outer sheath is slightly thicker but it's not far behind. Send me a pm with your address and i'll try and get some out tomorrow :)

So is it you can't buy a bow without the course? Make your own bow with a leaf spring.  :D

No you can buy and own bow's without doing the course (it's in the magna carter) and you are legally allowed to shot them on your own property, which is fine if you live on a farm!, but if you've only got a small garden and are surrounded by paranoid neigbours, it's just more hassel than it's worth :(, the course is just so you can shoot on a secure dedicated archery site ::)

As for making one out of a leaf spring I think I'll pass :D

Hi all

Thats a really good idea, some paracord and some leather.!

After reading a few of the threads in the link I would say standard paracord would be the best idea.  I have some shockcord, but I would not use that for a slingshot as you would get the "springback" effect...

...this is where you would throw the sling and with stretchcord it would expand as you threw the sling. Well with shochcord, if it expands it would need to contract, so the sling would then whip right back to your hand with the danger to hurt yourself.

Standard 550 cord would be perfect as I would say the less "give" the cord had would be the best.

Thanks
deano

If you can get your hands on any; surgical tubing,or Penrose drain works great.Rubber tourniquets do a terrific job too.
