84MM scissors
on: March 31, 2013, 10:40:05 PM
Were the 84mm scissors ever updated to resemble the later 91mm ones? I am looking at closed photos of a knife that is supposed to be 3 1/4" but the scissors have a gap at the joint like recent 91s. Trying to figure out whether a knife is 84 or 91mm when some can't read a ruler gives me fits. Any tips?

The few 84 mm's with scissors that I have all have no gap between the scissor arms.  So I don't know if Vic made some later with the gap like modern 91 mm scissors.
One way to possibly tell photos of 84 mm and 91 mm SAKs from each other:  the shield-and-cross emblem is located nearer to the end of the knife on the 84 mm.  Comparing the photo with known knives in hand might tell you which you are seeing.

Ive never seen 84s that look like 91s.  I bet the SAK is a 91.

No. 84mm scissors look the same from 1952 until they stopped making them in the 1980s.

Thanks guys, Looking in Wiki and completed auctions I didn't see one. I scaled the photo and laid knives on the screen and convinced myself it was an 84mm. You likely saved me from buying a disappointment.

Do you know about when 84mm scissors came to an end? I found a couple of photos with round phillips but none with a sewing eye in the reamer.

I've never seen any official date but looking at knives they seem to have stopped in the mid to late 1980s, although they do show up on some special run knives into the mid 1990s. Keep in mind a that the 84mm line didn't get the awl w/ sewing eye in 1985 like the 91mm line did, so that particular feature is not a good way to date these knives.

Jazz, you shot a hole in one of my dating milestones on the timeline. Any idea when 84s changed over? I figured the reamers were interchangeable between lines. If that's true maybe they just moved all the old parts to the 84mm line. I did think an ebay photo I was looking at had a corkscrew with no groove together with a no eye reamer.

I appreciate your response. I only recently started collecting so I only have a dozen or so knives to look at. Most of what I know about dating, I got from digging through your old posts on the other board.
