Surefire Optimus
on: April 12, 2008, 05:25:35 AM
THIS(link) is the most expensive pocket size flashlight I have ever heard of. It has so many features and an output range from 2 to 200 lumens. Do you think that its price of 279.95 USD is reasonable?

I could never justify me spending tht sort of money myself, but I suppose if those were the features you needed then I guess it could be classed as reasonable.  Especially as it would be backed with Surefire's bulletproof warranty.

I'll have one as soon as they are out. I figure if I don't like it I'll be able to sell it and break even. If all the features work as they are supposed to I don't see any reason this should not be the best light out there.

If I had the dough I'd definately get one, not he optimus thou, but the 400 lumen invictus in your last picture. IMO there is simply no better way to control the output than the rotating ring by surefire.

It's neat to have for lights with tail switch. I like to pinch it with index and middle finger and control switch with thumb, and the grip would make it easier to hold it without slipping.

Agreed.  I would prefer they would call it a "cigar grip" rather than "combat", but I suppose that's more marketable.

That's the one I would get too if I had the $. 400 Surefire lumens should be amazing. The new quad-die LED it's using looks really cool just itself.

If I have one I will be hesitant to use it in hand to hand combat. Too expensive to be used as a weapon.

Combat grip doesn't mean it's used as a weapon. You hold it like a cigar, use thumb pad to control switch, while use both hands to shoot your handgun.

No I know how it's meant to be used, (sorry I should have made it clearer), no I meant how a lot of these newer torches are being touted as melee/impact weapons.

Because that's what the mall ninjas and police officers go to buy when they go to the store; none of them want to buy a product advertised as having a "hippie grip." :D

But back to the original question, is it reasonable as such, or reasonable in comparison to the crazy $ that some people spend on flashlights? Maybe and yes.
I would love to have one, but do not know of a mushroom tea powerful enough to induce me to spend that kind of money on a light. I already almost wet myself when I paid $135 for my L1. If and when they come down in price, and I am somehow blind enough not to get enough utility out of the L1 (and being willing to carry something twice as big) I might buy one. At that moment in time, it is however possible that pigs will have taken to flight, cows will conduct aerial poo assaults on rural communities, and Hell will be the world's most famous fresh powder coated ski resort...

I use my Z2 with it's combat grip all the time for those late night water gun fights. ::)
