Multi-clothing 'dem Buffs
on: March 01, 2013, 04:25:58 AM
My sister gave me a National geographic 'Temple' Buff about 8 years ago since i am the bandana type.

Although i loved the pattern i didn't wear it much as its synthetic and i like cotton. (I have around 30+ bandanas. Half of them are cut up Tshirts .) So my sister reclaimed that buff for her global travels and loves it to bits. I never really felt the tube design was any way more. Last year i even thought of getting her a merino buff for christmas but went with something else instead

Anyway I was given a D&G beanie last christmas. Not really a D&G yuppie but it got myself thinking hey i need a merino beanie like this instead of designer acrylic. From there i ebay yields me some beanies and i settle on one (read cheapest plain design available) click on sellers other items just to be sure there isn't a variation that search words didn't pick up and find myself looking at a merino Buff clone for the same price by EDZ gear in graphite gray. So i bought it.

Funny how i dismissed the buff for so long as an overpriced bandana and now i love it as flexible beanie. Wearing all day and played with its configurations. The only one i'm dubious about is the balaclava/ninja mode doesn't quite work.

fortunately i do like it as i bought another 3 genuine merino buffs before the EDZ one arrived. As 'winter is coming'. A cream wheel pattern one for my sister birthday in april and 2 for me cause i liked the grey pattern version of the cream... but now that i got my graphite EDZ i'm thinking my sister should get the grey one instead... Its more pratical stain resistant neutral colour for traveling...   :ahhh not because i want the cream one :dd:

There is definately something wrong with me cause if find myself wanting a few of the other patterns/colours. My lack of money is the only thing staving off me getting more such items that will render me with a lack of money.
 :megaslap:

Buffs are fantastic, I use nothing but :tu: and a boonie or ballcap.

Here's a nice demo showing the balaclava/ninja and sahariana/legion:

I've got a couple, but you have a problem :D

We embrace all such problems here luckily

The one I use the most was about £3 from the local army & navy store.

I have a few Buffs which get quite frequent use. I did try the merino version, but found it annoying being slightly slimmer and noticably longer. The standard version works better for me

I always use one, but mine is a Nomex one. Very warm, and the ninja mode works for me. I tend to use pirate mode when I am donwloading stuff.

I like them more than a scarf b/c it doesnt get stuck, its ligther and smaller.

never leave home wihout ´em

I don't get it, what's the big deal about a neckwarmer? Some people on EDCF are crazy over it.

I don't get it, what's the big deal about a neckwarmer? Some people on EDCF are crazy over it.

it does warm up the body quite well,or rather, it doesnt allow heat to go out of the body so easliy. Remember that a few (important) blood vessels do go and quite superficially as well through the neck (carotid, yugular), and there is a mayor heat loss in the neck. The oposite is true as well, when there is too much heat, putting a cold towel on the neck decreases the temperature as well due to the same factors.

the buffs prevent heatloss in the neck. The head is also a mayor heat pipe for your body, specially when you suffer hairloss. The great thing about buffs is also their versatility. you can change the layout to cover up different conditions rather quickly. Granted, a buff is not as good as beanie, or a ski mask (legal uses, mind you), it does a great job of keeping the heat in.

Got my Buff-brand merino buffs in the post today. have to say i'm a little disappointed at how thin they are. the graphite EDZ one is 200g cloth. The Buff-Buffs are transparent and appear to be much lighter.

Conversation about buffs in general with my sister had her tell me she wouldn't want a white buff. Which is fortunate as i have decided to give her the brown one :D

One of those buffs might come in handy when out on the motorcycle. I'm a big fan of wool over synthetics, but I have to wonder if this is one of those times when a synthetic would be better. Anyone tried both and have an opinion? Does the wool have the stretch that the synthetic does? How does the thickness compare?

Thanks,
Dave

I use Buffs all the time. My fav is the Texas flag Buff I wear under my cycling helmet. I got a new one the other day that's oversized. I wore it when I went to the Grand Am of the Americas last weekend. It helped a lot on Saturday when it was in the low 40s in the morning.

I am going to have to throw a spanner in here...

A shemagh is the ultimate multi-function headware offering:

Full face/head cover.
Cap.
Cap with neck cover.
Small Blanket/cloth.
Triangular bandage (Ask a St Andrews first aider about the 30 ways to use a triangular bandage).
Superior as a scarf.
Short rope(?)

 :pok:

I just noticed the motorcycle question above.  In my opinion (having tried both) the shemagh is superior to the buff for the motorcycle as it takes up that triangular space between the nose and the chest rather well.  The buff is just too thin compared to a doubled up shemagh.  Although, in Scotland we need as much protection from the elements as we can get!

The Leatherman crunch.  One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass consumption. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

There are Buffs that are oversized and a bit thicker. We wore shemaghs in Iraq and I prefer the Buff.

A shemagh is fine when your using it, but I wouldn't want to pocket carry one when I'm not. I find the buff perfect for size, weight and versatility. Yes, there are times when a shemagh would be better, but there are also times when a parang/machete is better than a SAK. For pocket sized versatility the Buff (or one of the clones) rules!

I did buy one a while ago, threw it in the cart when I bought skis online thinking I'd use them together but was quite disappointed by how thin it is. I guess it appeals to people in warmer climate who aren't used to cold temperatures, but here people just go without any, and take out the real stuff when it's really cold.

Did you actually try carrying it or just discard it because how thin it was? It actually works very well even in cold weather. -20°C no problem. It keeps the warmth in and the wind out, and you can breath through it easily. It won't slip down or unravel like a wool scarf would, and keeps my beany from rotating on my head or slipping up (don't know if other people have this problem :D ) You can even carry it over the scarf if you want, it's light enough and stretchable to adapt to that.

I ended up getting a cheap knockoff made from some synthetic material. I've been amazed at how well it blocks the wind on those cold morning motorcycle rides. I wouldn't have thought that such a thin layer of fabric would make such a difference. And it disappears into a pocket, once the day warms up, very discreetly.

My graphite EDZ merino multi-tube is 200gm weight. Which is much thicker compared to the merino Grey buff i have. Its thinner than my 150gm shirts. EDZ also make 165gm ones in blue or red.

Since they are a similar price on ebay to BUFF brand i'd definately recommend them 1st especially for colder climates.  i think for travelling and general activities i will take multiples.
already tried out my 'guerrilla' ninja look using the Merino BUFF as a beanie and the thicker EDZ multi-tube as a face mask/warmer. If my head got cold then a $3 china-buff layered on top of the merino buff should be enough.  :tu:

If i am kidnapped and dumped in the artic circle i'll add a plastic bag inbetween or use clingwrap
