I've done a couple of "scissors into 93mm Alox" mods and have used Pioneer Solo blade springs and 91mm scissors to achieve the end result.

This does however leave me with a Pioneer blade (and scales) and a 91mm scissor spring that are just thrown in the parts box. The scales i can probably use at a later date and I did use one pioneer blade to freshen up a knife with a heavily sharpened blade.

Inspired by the build of my 1000 post giveaway folder, I decided to try fitting the Pioneer blade and 91mm scissor backspring together on a "mule" chassis to see if I could get them working together and once the geometry was worked out to build a semi-custom knife.

I'm not really sure which sub-forum this really belongs in, but I guess I can post a couple of pictures here and a couple of different ones in Swiss and Slippys.

After I got the location for the pivot hole worked out I made some brass side plates and brass bolsters. These were soldered together and red Mallee burl scales epoxied on. The knife is assembled with brass rod rivets.
It has nice strong snap open and closed and I think it worked out quite pretty.

Alternatively, you could make a cellidor model with a 93m blade?  That might be cool, and some folks might prefer that?

Cheers

Once you go wood, cellidor is just another cheap piece of plastic.  :D

Wished there were more snap-on wood scales, maybe with double-sided attachment squares. Laser cut them puppies, or offer a particled wood substrate, or something classy other than a cheap piece of plastic.

(Almost) Anything is possible, but that would be a lot of work. The blade is quite a bit bigger both in length and width. Also slightly thicker and the pivot is 3mm.

The main problem would be the 4th pin, the Pioneer blade would want to chop it halfway through in the closed position. So anything with the opener layers would be no go.

I guess something with a 91mm saw spring driving an opener at the same end as the knife as a second layer would be doable. I might try that with some of the Wenger springs I have kicking around, I don't have a 91mm saw spring at the moment.

That looks very  and I'd like to try out one of those but I'm a bit confused by this picture.

You say you've been using the scissors backspring for it but shouldn't there be a gap for the hook there then or did you fill it with a spacer? Or are you using only the pre-1991 backsprings?

From personal experience, getting wood scales from New South Wales (their east coast) to Idaho (western state) takes about 10 days.

My first pocket knife was a little Buck folder with brass and wood scales. This knife sort of reminds me of a design halfway between that and a standard SAK. Maybe not the most functions, but pretty, and striking a real chord of nostalgia for me. :tu:

Yes, it's a pre-hook backspring.

Similar time-frame coming "downhill".  Most things take between 10 and 15 days. But the occasional item takes longer.

Nice use of spare parts!

Im amassing a bunch of random parts in quantity too, that I'll have to figure some use for.  I could build many tinkers or spartans.  Maybe cladding them in brass or Ti would make them interesting.

:hatsoff: Yet another very cool pocket-knife by PTRSAK. Congrats man, keep making them in style.
How's the 91mm spring holding the Pioneer blade? I can't really figure out if there are any significant differences.

Robert, I thought you'd be hoarding 91mm "guts" for when you get that CNC mill and start cranking out 91ALOX.  :pok:

How's the 91mm spring holding the Pioneer blade? I can't really figure out if there are any significant differences.

The spring has been ground or filed on just about every surface for one reason or another.
The main Functional rework was to the end of the spring where it fits against the blade to set the open and closed positions.
LOTS of trial fit... file a tiny bit off... trial fit... file a tiny bit... trial fit... file even less... (you get the picture).

Also I removed material "above" the pin at the butt end for clearance of the blade edge in the closed position.
All this was done on a jig or mule chassis made from a piece of aluminium plate and then the hole positions transferred to the brass for the side plates.

The butt and back were ground with the scales to make a smooth contour. I tried to get the curve of the butt to flow on from the curve of the blade spine.

I should have taken pic's... But I've got another spring and a beat up old 93mm blade with an Elinox tang stamp that I want to try and resurrect and I got some Ebony today so I may do another one similar to this one. I'll take photos of the build of that one.
I say "similar" because they are hand made with no plans or drawings so they just evolve in my hands and I stop when it looks like a knife.

Yep I have a ton of regular parts I can make up alox knives with at that point, but all the 'good' parts have been harvested.  I have lots of blades and openers though. OH and fish scalers. :D

You just HAVE to build something as thick as a Swiss Champ that is all Fish Scalers.

That would be
