Newbie with an identity crisis
on: April 12, 2013, 04:38:42 AM
Good evening,

I am brand new to the forum.  My journey into the rabbit hole of sharp objects started with vintage Gillette razors, detoured into kitchen knife sharpening stones and has now led to a budding Swiss Army knife addiction.  I have had a Wenger of some sort for about 25 years.  It basically lives in the arm of my easy chair and doesn't get much use.  I recently ordered a Victorinox Rally for my keychain and today found the knife below.  I had stopped by one of my razor haunts and asked the proprietor is she had any pocket knives.   She had a tray with mostly Chinese knockoffs and beat up odds and ends.  There was however this seemingly legit SAK that looked like a reasonable buy so I grabbed it.  The main blade says "WENGER DELEMONT SWITZERLAND" on one side and "WENGERINOX" with the crossbow emblem on the other.  The scales have somewhat normal looking cross and shield on one side and a crest with "ZURICH" below it on the other.  Can anyone shed some light on what this might be?  Also, do you have any tips on cleaning it up a little?  It is in pretty good shape as is.  All the tools open and close smoothly and seem tight.  Thanks in advance for any information you all can share.

Hey Ollie. Welcome to the boards. Feel free to drop by the New Members forum and drop a quick note there.

I'm not a Wenger expert, but I'm sure someone will be along momentarily to help you out.

For some cleaning info, maybe try this thread...

Welcome!

You got a really nice old Swiss Army Knife there!

For cleaning I would start with warm water, soap and a toothbrush. Repeat as needed. Then dry and oil.

Hi Ollie,

Welcome to the forum!

The triangular metal shield, claw-style can opener, and smooth handles date your Wenger to the early 1960s. It look like it's in excellent shape. Great find!

For more info pick up a copy of 'The Swiss Army Knife Owner's Manual' by Michael Young. Lots of great information.

For newer knives and a lot of other useful info check out SAKwiki.
