Slightly embarrassed to ask this question.
on: April 19, 2008, 07:44:15 AM
Ok, as a fairly knowledgeable multi-tool collector I should know this but for some reason I have no idea what the fasteners that Leatherman uses on most of their tools are called. The round ones with all the points.  :-X

I know one of you guys covered this but I don't know the name to do a search for it.  :D

For the new models it is security torx screw like this one.

But for the old models like the Supertool I don't know what screw it is.

That's the one I would like to know. I thought it was called a "triple square" but that's not right.

I always wondered what those darn screws were called also. J-Sews always calls them knurled screws. That's what I've been calling them. He seems like a pretty smart man. :D

I don't know offhand the size of the heads on the LM's but you may find a 12-point socket in a metric size around 5 or 6 that might do the trick, eh?

Nope, it won't work because the little "teeth" on the Leatherman screw heads won't engage the socket. Only a perfectly matching socket will grab the screw tightly enough to turn it.

And as if it weren't difficult enough already, those assembly demons at Leatherman actually use (at least) three different sizes of knurled screws! (For the entire rest of the world, those sizes shown below roughly equate to 7mm, 6mm, and then 5mm diameter on the Micra.)

Tool bit set with torx screwdriver are now available here and I just bought a set with the right sizes of bits for Leatherman MTs. It's a cheap kind and I got it from the local hardware store for an equivalent to 1 USD.

Those kits seem pretty much available in most hardware stores, it's the 5 point that are difficult to get hold of.  1 USD seems like a pretty good price to me.  :)

I again just call them knurled screws but this is also only because Bob refers to them as those.  He is such a trend setter isn't he.  :D

So does that mean all of you guys are gonna start styling your hair like I do?  :D

I dunno what the official name is for those screws. The first I ever saw them was on Leatherman tools. Then Kershaw used some on their locking multi tool. Now it seems like a lot of the Chinese imports are using them.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

They will not reply until Monday or Tuesday. LM is closed on the weekends and an employee told me that Mondays are a very busy day for them.

I thought they were Chicago, or barrel, screws? I'm sure they're made by/for LM with the patterned edges because I've never seen them like that before.

Well I got a response back from Leatherman about the Screws here it is  :D

Thank you for your inquiry.

I apologize for the delay in our response, but I had to wait for our
design engineers to respond to me about this question.  Apparently this
is 'proprietary' information, their comments as follows:

The "Knurled Head" is proprietary to Leatherman. You can not go and buy
a tool for this type of head.

Regards,
Karol Wendler
Leatherman Tool Group

So I guess there is our answer folks and Bob you were right all along about the name  :D

Oh well, myth busted :(
"Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall;
Some run from breaks of ice, and answer none:
And some condemned for a fault alone." -William Shakespeare, King Lear (1608), Act IV, scene 6, line 169
