Pocket PowerPlier file
on: April 14, 2008, 09:29:18 PM
One thing I've noticed is the file on mine has a square flat end like a screwdriver , on other Sogs its rounded  Is it an older style and is it ment to be used as a screwdriver .

I meant to post that question.. I always wondered that! I think that rounded ones are newer, but I could be wrong...

The flat tipped one was standard on the Paratools,  the rounded version was introduced on the original PowerPlier's, not sure if it made it onto the PocketPowerPlier.  That's the only time I've seen this file as standard equipment.  Subsequent models seemed to all get the flat tipped one which could double as a large flat screwdriver, though none of Sog's writeups claim its a "3 sided file/screwdriver".   Also even with this particular file you still get a large flat screwdriver.  The rounded tip file is only available as a replacement/upgrade component.   I think its much better more aggressive and shaves better.

Check it out http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,5558.0.html

Which file do you prefer?.   I replaced all my flat ones with the rounded one, it seems better.

The flat one. I like the option of having a long flat screwdriver. So if you got a bunch of flat files at home just send it too me, I will take good care of them for you.

I have 2 spares, I'm sure we can work out a trade.  ;)

Hehe, I have nothing to trade really. Only got the round file that is on my Paratool and the blade that is originally shipped with the Powerlock.

I'd be afraid the file would break if used as a screwdriver.  Aren't most files hardened more than the other impliments making them more brittle?

I don’t think using it at as a pry bar or on though screws is a wise thing cause I can imaging it braking, don’t have any solid facts that it will, just think so. I like the possibility of having a screwdriver with some reach and I wish that SOG would make a long Philips someday.

I found some pics of why I like the new design on the file from SOG.

To fit in a tight sport just don't fold the tool shut.  Then only the leg with the driver is facing the screw.  A little awkward to hold, but has a much smaller profile.

I used that technique today; I used my V-cutter as a hook to pull a strap through a small hole.

I have both, the square edged on a Paladin PT525 and the round version on a Power Lock.  The screwdriver is preferred here, but I fear that the file makes a very brittle screwdriver.  I guess if it did break I could always replace it easily though.  I'm going to tear them both apart and fit the tools I use most to the Paladin handles with the better pliers design and the gear covers.

Sorry for archaeology, but I didn't want to start a new topic over such a detail as PPP file....

I don't know if it's just my tool or a common case, but metal file on my PPP is extremely disappointing!
Frankly, it seems to be the worst quality file I've ever seen, comparable only to some of the second-grade Chinese tools. I'm not sure if it will be clearly visible on photo below, but notches are very shallow, at some places to the point of non-existence, and it's effectiveness is somewhere between using a file and rubbing tho pieces of metal together :(

Is it standard for that model or should I send it back for a replacement?
I tried to replace it with diamond file from LM PST, but it doesn't lock correctly :(

That file looks terrible to me, I'd send it back in a heartbeat.
