SMS Von Der Tann
on: May 15, 2013, 09:02:23 PM
I Live in the north side of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, It's an old fishing town on the north east coast, Scarborough is split in two by the old Norman Castle which overlooks both the north & south side, At the outbreak of WW1 my Grandfather was a policeman in the town. On the morning of Dec 16th my grandad was on duty in the town when the german navy started to bomb the town, One of the Bombs landed at St Nicholas Cliff where my Grandad was!! Luckily he wasn't injured badly :)Why am i telling this story i hear you ask!! I'll tell you :tu: One of the Battlecruisers that bombed the town was the SMS VON DER TANN! i'm currently doing a trade with Jerseydevil & i turns out his Great Grandfather was an officer on the SMS VON DER TANN :sa:!!  :twak:
This just shows the power of MTO & makes you realise however far apart we are! connections bring us closer. :D
I won't hold it against Tom for his G/Grandad trying to BLOW My Grandad up!!!!!!! Especially as Tom has agreed to give me his entire MT & SAK collection as compensation,

Wow, when I saw your address I had to check if that was the same Scarborough.  :o  Yep, my grandmother's father was an officer in the Imperial German Navy, the Kaiserliche Marine.  She was 4 when she came to the US after the war.  My grandfather on that side of the family was also born in Germany.  Since I'm only half German, Barry, I'll send you part of the collection- SAKalikes, a Gerber Suspension, couple of other things as reparations.....  ;)

I think ze Germans paid more than enough reparations for WW1. I think they were paying reparations up until about 10 years ago. But if you want to do it out of kindness you can send me something as well. :)

My surname is English, my maternal Grandmothers maiden name was Welsh, and my maternal Grandfathers name was Scottish. For some reason my paternal Grandmother's name is swathed in mystery (though I think that quite frankly it's because no one gives a smurf)

The cantankerous but occasionally useful member, formally known as 50ft-trad
